Role of Clay Liners in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills: A Review

Abstract: Rapid population growth has significantly increased the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in urban and suburban regions. Disposal of MSW in landfills without proper liner systems may lead to leachate migration and subsequent contamination of groundwater and surrounding soils. The use of liner systems at the base of landfills is therefore essential to minimize leachate percolation and protect the environment. Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) and compacted clay liners (CCLs) …

Stone Waste as a Soil Stabilizer

Abstract: The rapid expansion of construction, mining, and stone-processing industries has led to the large-scale generation of stone waste materials such as marble powder, granite slurry, quarry fines, and sandstone residues. The indiscriminate disposal of these wastes poses serious environmental concerns, including land degradation, dust pollution, and contamination of surface and groundwater resources. At the same time, weak and problematic soils continue to present major challenges in geotechnical engineering applications, particularly …

Soil Around the Pier Below the Bed Level of River

Abstract: This study presents the evaluation of vertical and lateral loads acting on a bridge pier–pedestal system subjected to self-weight and vehicular loading. The pier, having a height of 25 m, length of 20 m, and thickness of 1 m, was found to carry a self-weight of 1200 t. When combined with a vehicular load of 2000 t, the total vertical load on the pier becomes 3200 t. Considering lateral force …

    Seismic-Resilient Structural Systems: Geotechnical Engineering

Abstract: Earthquakes represent one of the most destructive natural hazards, capable of causing severe structural damage, loss of life, and substantial economic disruption. Seismic waves propagating through the ground can induce excessive forces and deformations in buildings, often leading to partial or complete collapse. Statistical records indicate that thousands of earthquakes occur globally each year, including several major events that result in significant damage. Past earthquake disasters have repeatedly demonstrated that …

Cretaceous–Tertiary Rift Basins of Northwestern Kenya: Tectonics, Stratigraphy, and Petroleum Implications

Abstract: This study looks at the potential for oil and gas in northwest Kenya, giving a broad overview of the geology, tectonic (earth movement) features, and underground rock layers in four main basins from the Cretaceous to Tertiary periods: Lotikipi, Lake Turkana, Lokichar–Kerio, and Chalbi. These are part of the larger East African Rift System. Recently, important signs of oil and gas structures have been found in the Lokichar Tertiary Basin …

A Shear Strength Reduction Method for an Open Pit Slope Stability Analysis Based on Finite Element Method

Abstract: Slope stability assessment of open pit mines is critically important, since it forms part of the overall productivity and safety management strategy of the mines. The aim of this work is to investigate the overall stability conditions of three (3) open pits in Gold Fields Limited, Tarkwa Ghana. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted as well as empirical methods. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in Rocscience was carried out using the …

Assessment of Clayey Soils and Bentonite to Use as Compacted Clay Liner for the Disposal of Municipal Solid Wastes at Lucknow City, India

Abstract: Dumping of municipal solid wastes in a pit without liner causes groundwater contamination. Use of locally available clayey soils will be a cost-effective landfill technique. Mixing of locally available soils with bentonite reduces the permeability. To develop the liner for the disposal of municipal solid wastes generated from Lucknow city, India, the soil samples were collected from three different locations as nearby the Sagar Institute, Barabanki district; near railway crossing, …

Modeling Deformation Mechanisms of Horseshoe Tunnel Excavation In Layered Ground Using Flac 3D

Abstract: In the modern era of civilization, the transportation sector plays a pivotal role in a nation's development. Efficient transportation networks are essential for economic progress, and tunnels are particularly valuable in this regard, as they help reduce travel time and fuel consumption. With growing interest in underground infrastructure, researchers are increasingly focusing on tunnel-related studies. This paper examines the deformational behavior of a horseshoe-shaped tunnel constructed in layered soil, subjected …

DEM Simulation of Macro and Micro-scale Behavior of Granular Materials during Loading and Unloading

Abstract: The present paper aims at comparing the simulated stress-strain behavior of granular materials quantitatively with the experiment and exploring the evolution of the micro-scale behaviors during loading and unloading using the discrete element method (DEM). A numerical sample consisting of 9826 randomly generated spheres similar to the experiment was prepared. The numerically prepared isotropic sample was subjected to loading and unloading under strain controlled condition. It is noticed that the …

Effect of Particle Size of Sand on the Interface Shear Behavior of Sand and Non-woven Geotextile

Abstract: Soil-geosynthetic interface is the weakest zone for shear failure. It is influenced by size, shape, density and water content of sand. It is also influenced by the properties of geosynthetic such as texture and structure. This paper explores the influence of the size of sand on the behavior of sand-geotextile interface. Three types of sands namely coarse, medium and fine sand and non-woven geotextile were used in this study. Several …

Thermal Analysis of Isotropic and Orthotropic Plate by Trigonometric Shear Deformation Theory

Abstract: In the present study, a sinusoidal shear and normal deformation theory taking into account effects of transverse shear as well as transverse normal is used to develop the analytical solution for the bidirectional bending analysis of isotropic, transversely isotropic, laminated composite and sandwich rectangular plates. Governing equations and boundary conditions of the theory are obtained using the principle of virtual work. The Navier solution for simply supported laminated composite plates …
