Understanding the Structural Stability of the Tehri Dam: A Comprehensive Analysis
Abstract: The Tehri dam is the highest dam in India. The height of dam is 260 m. It is situated on the Himalayan region which is in earthquake prone region. A Sengupta in 2006 found that the predicted deformation due to an M=7.0 earthquake are not large enough to compromise the safety of the dam. However the deformation predicted by Seed and Makdisi’s method, and Bureau’s method for an M=8.5 earthquake …

Bearing Capacity of Skirted Ring Footing Resting on Dense Sand Overlying Soft Clay
Abstract: This study determines the ultimate bearing capacity of unskirted/skirted ring footing on dense sand of finite thickness on top of a layer of indefinite extent of soft clay under concentric vertical stress by means of finite element analysis. The thickness of an upper dense sand layer varied between 1 and 4 metres. The upper dense sand layers maintained a friction angle between 40° and 44°. The results indicate that the …

Economic Importance of Laterite Deposit in Oke-Oyi Area, Ilorin, Nigeria
Abstract: Two soil samples A and B were taken from Oke-Oyi, Kwara state, North Central, Nigeria. The water content of the samples are 5.8% and 6.5 for sample A and B respectively. This shows the variability in water table in the area. The specific gravities values are 2.7 and 2.78 for samples A and B, this is an indicator of inorganic soil. Grain size analysis show the laterite to be sandy …

Carbon dioxide injection to remove shale gas from sedimentary clayey schists
Abstract: This paper proposes an alternative method to the fracking technique to obtain shale gas, injecting compressed carbon dioxide in the subsoil. The injection of a pressurized gas like carbon dioxide into a porous media provokes the removal of existing gas into the pores, provided the pressure of the injected gas is high enough. The design of the adequate geotechnical structure makes it possible to inject pressurized carbon dioxide and extract …

Assessing the Poisson Ratio of Reinforced Earth under Static and Dynamic Stresses
Abstract: Poisson’s ratio is an essential property of the soil strength and it is a measure of the amount of lateral strain in the soil sample caused due to the longitudinal strain of the soil. An attempt has been made in the present work to detect the variation in the Poisson ratio for reinforced and asphalt stabilized soil when tested under static and dynamic compressive stresses. Soil embankment model was prepared …
