Marine Algal Secondary Metabolites Promising Anti-Angiogenesis Factor against Retinal Neovascularization in CAM Model
Abstract: Retinal angiogenesis is an angle of new blood vessels on retinal surface. This neovascularization condition within the eye contributes to visual loss. Commonest cause of this condition includes diabetes, retinopathy of prematurity, retinal vein occlusion, etc. A variety of endothelial cell growth factors have been identified as a responsible factor and previous studies report that marine metabolites are promising molecules against retinal angiogenesis. Based on the background information collected, the …

Marine Algal Microfiber and Agro-Waste Reinforced Crosslinked Polymer Composites for Sustainable Coastal Materials
Abstract: Crosslinked bio-polymer composites reinforced with marine algal microfibers and agro-waste fillers were fabricated and systematically characterized for sustainable coastal applications. Mechanical testing revealed that tensile strength increased from 18.5 MPa for neat polymer to 25.1 MPa at 20 wt.% reinforcement (~35% improvement), while the flexural modulus improved from 0.72 GPa to 1.02 GPa (~42% increase). Impact strength, however, decreased from 3.8 kJ/m² for neat polymer to 2.9 kJ/m² at 30 …

Biosorption of Fluoride from Aqueous Solution Using Ulva fasciata sp.: A Marine Green Algae
Abstract: Water is a useful and vital natural resource for sustaining life and environment that we have always thought to be available in abundance and free gift of nature. Enhanced industrial activity during recent decades has led to the discharge of unprecedented volumes of industrial waste water, which is a serious cause of environmental degradation. Excessive fluoride concentrations have been reported in ground waters of more than 20 developed and developing …

Algal Resources in the Indian Coastal and Marine Systems with Special Reference to Sundarbans
Abstract: AbstractNaturally endowed with a coastline of about 8,000 Km represented in a wide range of ecosystems like estuaries, mangroves, backwaters, salt marshes, sandy beaches, rocky coasts, coral reefs, and many such variations in ecosystem diversity, India is also predictably blessed with a treasure of marine biotic resources. A conservative estimate of about 80% of all such resources is found in the coastal zones. Such diversity is attributed to the complex …

Review of Hydroxyapatite Coating: Enhances Bioactivity and Osteoconductivity in Natural Hard Tissues
Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA or HAP) of biologically (produced from coral, cattle, or marine algae) or synthetic origin is used to repair and regenerate bone in the form of granules, blocks, and scaffolds, either alone or in a composite with polymers or other ceramics, or as a coating on dental or orthopedics implants. From the perspective of enhancing bioactivity, numerous methods for surface alteration and its combinations have been suggested. The composite …

Criteria for Algal Classification
Abstract: Algae are the photosynthetic microcells found in the aquatic environment. Algae are the unicells and multicellular microorganisms ranging in size from a few microns to the meters-long kelps in the ocean's large seas. Algae are both kinds, they can be prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms, prokaryotic algae are of the cyanobacteria, whereas the rest of the algae of the other classes are of eukaryotic origin. Algae are aquatic in origin, plant …

Optimization of Culture Conditions for the Mass Cultivation of Amphora coffeaeformis: A Promising Marine Diatom for Biodiesel Production
Abstract: Microalgae are promising primary producers involved in sustainable energy. As the oceanic environments are dwindling environments the primary productivity is influenced by light and temperature thereby altering the biochemical composition of the algae Amphora coffeaeformis, being a marine organism can be grown in varied environments, however for higher yield of biomass and lipid production simple modifications in the culture conditions is required. This study helps to exploit this species for …

Aquatic Ecosystems: A Review on Prospecting of Anticancer Molecules from Fungi & Other Microbes
Abstract: Marine biota; namely, actinomycetes, bacteria, fungi, microalgae, green algae, oceanic weeds, mangroves, and other extremophiles constitute about 90% of the oceanic biomass. The organisms are taxonomically diverse, biologically productive/active, and biochemically unique. These unique biochemiques may act as a great source for the discovery of new bioactive molecules, including anticancer drugs. The marines produce medicinally potent biochemicals; namely, sulfated saccharides, polyphenols, and, sterols. Only a few of these alkaloids have …
