Expansive Soils and Identification Methods
Abstract: Expansive soil is a well-known type of difficult soil. It can cause critical damage to civil engineering facilities. The unfavorited physical, mineralogical, and engineering characteristics are the main reasons for the difficult nature of expansive soil. Understanding specific parameters and properties of expansive soil are important to categorize and identify swell potential. Furthermore, reviewing the most useful methods for identifying and measuring the expansive soil characteristics may help the engineer …

Studies on Mechanical, Thermal Properties, Characterization and UV-Accelerated Weathering of HIPS-PLA Blends using Glycerol as Compatibilizer
Abstract: AbstractHIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) was blended with PLA (poly lactic acid) in three formulations as 80:20, 65:35 and 50:50% (wt%) using a twin screw extruder and by using glycerol (4%) as compatibilizer. Test specimens were prepared by using an injection moulding machine and the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties were determined. The tensile strength first decreases and then increases with increasing percentage of PLA, but lower than that of both …

STUDIES ON MECHANICAL, THERMAL AND PERMEATION PROPERTIES OF HDPE (BLOW GRADE) WITH MICROSILICA CLAY
Abstract: HDPE is widely used in container applications. The mechanical properties and barrier properties can be further improved by the addition of reinforcements like nanoclays. But, however the cost of nanoclays are higher about Rs.5000 – 6000/kg whereas micro silica cost is economical about Rs.450-1000/kg. Hence we used micro silica of 270nm particle size in this project with HDPE blow grade. HDPE (High density polyethylene) was melt blended with micro silica …

A Review on Study of Casting Defect in Automobile Component
Abstract: Casting process is the most widely used process in manufacturing industries especially in automotive products. Production of casting involves various processes like pattern making, molding, core making and melting. It is very difficult to produce defect free castings. In developing country, foundry industries suffer from poor quality and productivity due to involvement of number of process parameters in casting process, which challenges explanation about the cause of casting defects. The …

Analysis of Tall Structures for Different Stiffness Ratios of Columns to Shear Walls and Column Shortening
Abstract: Differential axial shortening in a structure causes axial force redistribution among columns and walls, and introduces additional forces in the horizontal members such as beams and slab. Hence, it needs to be considered in the design, especially for medium to high-rise buildings. The best way to illustrate differential column shortening is to conduct floor-by-floor analysis, generally known as construction sequence analysis. Commercial software ETABS is available for conducting sequential analysis. …

A Review Paper on Minimisation of Sand Casting Defects through Quality Improvement Methods
Abstract: Casting is a process of producing near net–shape metal components. It requires detailed planning, execution and quality inspection to ensure not only the dimensional accuracy of casting parts but the metallurgical integrity and mechanical properties of castings. This paper reviews the different types of casting defects such as shrinkage porosity, cold shut, sand inclusions, mould failure, surface hardening occurring in foundries. These defects directly affect on profitability and quality level …

Effective Design of Riser for Defect-Free Casting
Abstract: Accurate design of riser helps in producing a defect free casting part. Inaccurate design of riser results in defects like hot spot, shrinkage and blow holes. Present paper focuses on the study of the different parameters occurring during a solidification process, equation which governs the solidification problem and different boundary conditions which play vital role during heat transfer in a solidification process. A literature study is also been conducted in …

Effects of Weight Fractions on Properties of Aluminium-Fly Ash Metal Matrix Composites
Abstract: With particles of fly ash as the particulate addition, the properties of pure Al can be greatly improved. The incorporation of fly ash brings significant changes in some of its core properties like hardness, density, stiffness, strength, wear resistance. A comparison of the mechanical properties of pure Al have been done with three sets of Al-fly ash composites containing 6, 8 and 10% by weight fly ash which are manufactured …
