Integrated Water Balance and Water Stress Index–Based Sustainability Assessment of a Semi-Arid Island Ecosystem
Abstract: Freshwater scarcity is an increasingly critical challenge in semi-arid island environments due to limited natural water availability, high dependence on seasonal rainfall, growing population pressure, and expanding agricultural activities. Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to water stress because they often lack perennial surface water sources and rely heavily on groundwater recharge during short and highly variable monsoon periods. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of water demand, post-monsoon water availability, …

Prediction of Depth-Induced Stress Distribution and Maintenance Cost Implications for Submerged Structural Components
Abstract: This study investigates the influence of water depth on stress distribution and structural integrity of submerged mechanical components . Structural models fabricated from mild steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, and copper alloy were examined under hydrostatic loading corresponding to water depths between 30 cm and 150 cm. Results indicate that normal and shear stresses increased proportionally with depth due to intensified hydrostatic pressure. Mild steel exhibited the highest stress concentrations, …

Integrated Remote Sensing Indices for Assessing Pre-Monsoon Water Scarcity Vulnerability in a Semi-Arid Coastal Ecosystem: A Case Study of Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat, India
Abstract: Freshwater availability fundamentally shapes the structure and function of dryland ecosystems, where evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation for most of the year. Protected areas in semiarid regions face intensifying hydrological stress from climate variability, growing wildlife populations, and resident human communities, yet systematic spatial assessments of water scarcity remain scarce for many critical habitats. The Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in coastal Gujarat, India, has recently become a secondary home for the endangered Asiatic …

The Impact of Climate Change on Jute Production in Gaibandha District, Bangladesh
Abstract: Jute plays a crucial role in Bangladesh’s agricultural economy, especially in Gaibandha District, where it is a key crop for rural livelihoods. However, climate change, characterized by rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, poses significant threats to jute production. While numerous studies have explored the broader impact of climate change on agriculture, there is a gap in understanding how localized climate conditions specifically affect jute farming in Gaibandha, with many existing …

Enhancing Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Banana (Musa spp.) Using In Vitro Methods and Conserving Germplasm
Abstract: Both biotic and abiotic stressors are the main factors limiting banana output. Research on biotic stressors in bananas has received enough attention globally, whereas abiotic stressors receive less attention. Water availability, salinity, and a wide variety of temperatures are the main problems that must be resolved to maintain banana farming in the twenty-first century. Samples were introduced with water, salt and heat stresses in invitro condition. Under different stress and …

Fluid Dynamics of a Stressed Freshwater Lens: Integrated Flow Modeling and Pathways for Material-Centric Interventions in Khadir Island, Gujarat
Abstract: This study applies principles of fluid dynamics and porous media mechanics to analyze the behavior and sustainability of the freshwater lens in Khadir Island, an arid sedimentary island in Gujarat, India. We develop an integrated fluid flow model that couples surface hydrology with aquifer dynamics to quantify recharge fluxes, extraction stresses, and hydraulic responses. Using 11-year hydro-meteorological data (2011–2021) and sectoral demand projections, we characterize the island’s water budget through …

Causes and Measures to Control Root Rot Fungus in Mulberry Ecosystem
Abstract: Root rot is a severe plant disease caused by various soil-borne fungi, including Phytophthora sp., Pythium sp., Rhizoctonia sp., Fusarium sp., and Armillaria sp. These pathogens attack plant roots, leading to decay, stunted growth, wilting, yellowing leaves, and plant death. Root rot typically develops in waterlogged soils with poor drainage, as these conditions create an environment favorable for fungal growth. Factors such as warm temperatures, compacted soil, improper watering practices, …
