Effective Strategies for Sustainable Soil and Water Management: Enhancing Agricultural Productivity and Environmental Conservation
Abstract: Soil and water are essential natural resources, and their degradation due to erosion, overgrazing and other factors is ongoing. Water erosion is influenced by climate, topography, vegetation and soil, while wind erosion is affected by wind characteristics, surface features, topography and soil properties. Unsustainable land and water management practices lead to reduced soil fertility, soil loss, lower crop yields, water depletion, deforestation, and diminished biomass. Of the 1386 million cubic …

Integrated Water Balance and Water Stress Index–Based Sustainability Assessment of a Semi-Arid Island Ecosystem
Abstract: Freshwater scarcity is an increasingly critical challenge in semi-arid island environments due to limited natural water availability, high dependence on seasonal rainfall, growing population pressure, and expanding agricultural activities. Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to water stress because they often lack perennial surface water sources and rely heavily on groundwater recharge during short and highly variable monsoon periods. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of water demand, post-monsoon water availability, …

Innovative Approaches to Water Conservation in India: State-wise Case Studies
Abstract: India, a water-stressed country, faces significant challenges in managing its water resources. In response, various states in India have adopted innovative approaches to water conservation. This case study showcases state-wise initiatives, highlighting successes, challenges, and best practices. The study covers eight states: Rajasthan (Jal Bhagirathi Foundation's water harvesting structures), Gujarat (Check Dam initiative), Maharashtra (Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan's watershed development), Karnataka (Malaprabha Reservoir rejuvenation), Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company's …

Swachhata Hi Seva: Transforming Public Health, Environmental Sustainability, and Water Stewardship Through Community Engagement
Abstract: Swachhata (cleanliness) is not merely a hygiene practice but a foundational driver of public health, environmental resilience, and sustainable development. Recognizing its multidimensional importance, this research critically examines the “Swachhata Hi Seva” campaign as a transformative, community-led movement that elevates cleanliness from an individual responsibility to a collective civic duty and social commitment. The study highlights how the campaign mobilizes diverse community groups, institutions, and local governance structures to actively …

Treatment of Textile Industrial Wastewater using Hydrophilized Polyamide Nanofiltration Membrane for Water Recovery and Reuse
Abstract: The textile industry is very water intensive. Water is used for cleaning the raw material and for many flushing steps during the entire production process. During the process a large quantity of wastewater is produced which consists of dyes, heavy metals, pigments, and surfactants in high concentration levels all around the world. Dyes and other chemical laden wastewater released by textile industries is a major concern for the treatment which …

Integrated Surface Water–Groundwater Dynamics: Implications for Pollution Pathways, Prevention, and Environmental Control
Abstract: Water resources worldwide are increasingly threatened by pollution pressures amplified by climate change and intensified human activities. The vulnerability of surface water and groundwater systems to contamination is strongly governed by their dynamic hydrologic connectivity, which is often overlooked in pollution prevention and control frameworks. Rising global temperatures, altered precipitation regimes, land-use change, and intensified abstraction patterns modify recharge processes, flow paths, and contaminant transport mechanisms across environmental landscapes. This …

Assessing Urban Surface Runoff Management Using the SWAT Model, GIS, and the Rational Method: A Case Study of Karapakkam
Abstract: Urban surface runoff management encompasses strategies aimed at regulating rainwater flow, reducing urban flooding, enhancing groundwater recharge, and contributing to disaster risk mitigation for sustainable urban development. This study seeks to optimize surface runoff management in urban settings by using the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) model integrated with geographic information systems (GIS) to minimize flood risks. The research focuses on the peak runoff in Karapakkam, a locality within …

Physiographic, Climatic, and Hydrogeological Determinants of Urban Flooding in Bhopal: A Spatial Assessment
Abstract: Bhopal, capital city of Madhya Pradesh, is uniquely shaped by hilly terrain, lake systems, and complex hydrogeological characteristics, which historically supported efficient natural drainage. However, rapid urbanization, encroachment, and alterations in land use have increasingly disrupted these natural systems, amplifying the city’s susceptibility to urban flooding. The city’s physiography, defined by five major hills, undulating slopes, and a network of natural drainage channels, directs runoff toward low-lying zones that frequently …

AquaSential: Autonomous UAV-Based Water Quality Monitoring System
Abstract: The increasing occurrence of waterborne health risks and the presence of harmful microorganisms in freshwater environments highlight the need for rapid and continuous water quality monitoring. Traditional laboratory-based testing methods often require significant time and manual sampling, limiting their ability to provide immediate information about changing environmental conditions. This work presents AquaSential, a low-cost, portable, and UAV-ready water quality monitoring system designed for real-time assessment of freshwater bodies. The proposed …
