Sumatriptan Succinate Mucoadhesive Buccal Tablets: Formulation Design, Optimization and Evaluation
Abstract: The main aim of present investigation was to develop and study mucoadhesive buccal tablets of sumatriptan succinate using different bioadhesive polymer. Nine formulations were prepared by using direct compression method with varying concentration of polymer as HPMC (Metolose SR 90SH-15000), xanthan gum (XTGM) and sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (sodium CMC). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to identify drug excipient interaction. Micromeritic properties of lubricated blend, physical properties and chemical …

Formulation and Evaluation of Buccal Mucoadhesive Bilayered Tablets of Enalapril Maleate
Abstract: The buccal mucoadhesive bilayered tablets of Enalapril Maleate were fabricated with objective of avoiding first pass metabolism and prolonging the duration of action. The tablets were prepared by wet granulation wherein, one layer comprised of drug and bio adhesive polymer, whereas second layer consisted of drug free backing layer of ethyl cellulose. Bioadhesive polymers like Carbopol 934P and one either of three HPMC K4M/ HPMC K15M/ HPMC K100M were employed …

A Comprehensive Review on Buccal Drug Delivery System
Abstract: Buccal delivery involves the running of the desired drug through the buccal mucosal membrane lining of the oral cavity. The buccal region of the oral cavity is a striking target for administration of the drug of choice because it offers some discrete advantages over all other routes. However, the mucosal lining of the oral cavity drugs which undergo rigorous firstpass metabolism, for those drugs, buccal route are excellent. Buccal drug …

Design and Development of Novel Floating Drug Delivery Systems
Abstract: Recent advances in science and technology have greatly aided in the creation of novel drug delivery methods, especially in addressing physiological issues including irregular stomach emptying times and brief stomach residence periods. Long-term stomach absorption is the goal of gastro-retentive dosage forms (GRDF). Floating drug delivery systems, expanding or swelling systems, polymer-based bioadhesive systems, high-density systems, and other ways that postpone stomach emptying are just a few of the techniques …

Gastro Retentive Drug Target System: Its Needs, Advantages, Limitation and Approaches
Abstract: Background: Gastro retentive drug delivery systems (GRDDS) address limitations of oral therapy for drugs with poor solubility, instability at intestinal pH, or narrow absorption windows by prolonging gastric residence and increasing contact with the gastric mucosa. Objectives: To review GRDDS approaches—floating systems, mucoadhesive systems, and super porous hydrogels—with emphasis on formulation strategies and polymer–excipient selection to enhance gastric retention, modulate buoyancy/swelling/adhesion, and ultimately improve oral bioavailability and therapeutic outcomes for …

Drugs and Polymers Used for Colon Specific Drug Delivery System with Current Trends: A Systematic Review
Abstract: Due to greater flexibility in design of dosage form and high patient compatibility, oral route of administration is the most preferred route but the gastrointestinal tract has many types of other undefeatable barriers to drug delivery. In oral colon-specific drug delivery system, colon has a large amount of lymphoma tissue which facilitates direct absorption into the blood, negligible brush border membrane activity, and much less pancreatic enzymatic activity as compared …

Formulation Development of Antihypertensive Buccal Patches and Characterisation
Abstract: Buccal patches containing atenolol and nifedipine were fabricated from mucoadhesive polymers like chitosan and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) 15CPS for the purpose of prolonging drug release and improving their bioavailability. The fabricated films were smooth, uniform and the colour was brown with good flexibility. The weight and thickness of all the formulations were found to be uniform. The drug content was in the range of 95–98%, indicating drug uniformity. Swelling index …

A Review on Sodium Alginate: A Natural Polymer
Abstract: Polymer is large molecules (macromolecule) of natural or synthetics substances, composed of many repeated subunits of monomers. It is broadly classified into three types namely natural polymers, semi-synthetic and synthetic polymers. Natural polymers are having the advantages of biocompatibility, biodegradability and safety over synthetic polymers. The natural polymers have different roles and applications in the pharmaceutical formulations such as binders, matrix formers or drug release modifiers, film coating formers, thickeners …
