An Overview of Microbial Diversity in the Functions of Wetland Ecosystems
Abstract: Wetlands serve as abundant reservoirs of biodiversity, crucial for the well-being of both humanity and the natural world. They represent the most critical and fertile ecosystem, where water predominantly dictates the environment and the plant and animal species that inhabit it. Wetlands have diverse microbial flora and fauna, which play essential roles in ecosystems. Soil and aquatic microorganisms mediate many processes, such as biogeochemical cycles, waste decomposition, symbiotic relationships, and …

Fusion of deep learning autoencoders with random forest for wetland classification using Sentinel-2A data: A case study on Sirpur wetland
Abstract: Present study analyses the performance of deep leaning algorithm-autoencoder to reduce data dimension as compared to conventional models. Classification accuracies of Sirpur wetland using Sentinel 2A dataset with different inputs have also been studied. These inputs sets comprise the reconstructed data through compression of original 13 bands into 4 bands using decoder algorithm, first four Principal Components, all spectral bands, and spectral indices. Random Forest classifier (RF) is used to …

Punjab’s Wetlands as Inland Analogues of Marine Ecosystems: Status, Stressors and CommunityLed Conservation.
Abstract: Aquatic and wetland ecosystems in Punjab, India, represent ecologically significant yet increasingly degraded socioecological systems embedded within an intensively managed agrarian landscape. Despite their recognised importance, existing studies largely treat these systems using conventional freshwater ecological frameworks, with limited integration of microbiologically mediated processes and broader ecosystem theories. A key research gap, therefore, lies in the lack of interdisciplinary approaches that can holistically interpret wetland structure, function, and governance across …

Smart Bio-Polymer Composite Systems for Sustainable Bio-Polymer Composite Media for Enhanced Pollutant Removal in Constructed Wetland Systems Using Machine Learning
Abstract: Constructed wetlands are widely used for wastewater treatment due to their low cost and ecological compatibility; however, their efficiency in removing emerging contaminants remains limited. This study presents the development of biodegradable polymer-based composite materials integrated into wetland filtration systems to enhance pollutant removal efficiency. Bio-polymers combined with natural fillers such as biochar and clay were synthesized and evaluated under simulated wetland conditions. The results demonstrate improved adsorption capacity, increased …

Integration of Multispectral Satellite data with Ensemble Machine Learning Models for Wetland Classification: a new Ramsar Site in Central India
Abstract: For biodiversity conservation, several wetlands in India have been classified as Ramsar sites, and Sirpur Lake is a recent addition to the list. The objective of this paper is to use Sentinel optical data with 10-meter resolution to prepare a robust and accurate classified map which will be crucial for further analysis. The data on thirteen spectral bands along with four essential spectral indices, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized …

Treated Sewage in Fish Farming and Ecological Challenges
Abstract: The use of treated sewage in fish farming presents a sustainable and cost-effective approach towards resource conservation and aquaculture productivity. Treated sewage is enriched with essential nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, which supports the growth of aquatic plants and phytoplankton. These are vital components of aquaculture ecosystems. This practice reduces freshwater dependency and mitigates waste disposal challenges as well as aligns with circular economy principles. Pilot projects in China and …

Microbial Population Dynamics during Phytobioremediation of Hydrocarbon- Contaminated Swampy and Clay Soils
Abstract: Soil contamination by petroleum hydrocarbons remains a critical environmental challenge, particularly in wetland and clay-rich ecosystems where natural attenuation processes are often limited. This study investigates the response of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) during the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated swampy and clay soils amended with Moringa oleifera biomass and elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum). The objective was to evaluate microbial population dynamics under varying amendment dosages and to identify treatment conditions favorable …

Integrated Surface Water–Groundwater Dynamics: Implications for Pollution Pathways, Prevention, and Environmental Control
Abstract: Water resources worldwide are increasingly threatened by pollution pressures amplified by climate change and intensified human activities. The vulnerability of surface water and groundwater systems to contamination is strongly governed by their dynamic hydrologic connectivity, which is often overlooked in pollution prevention and control frameworks. Rising global temperatures, altered precipitation regimes, land-use change, and intensified abstraction patterns modify recharge processes, flow paths, and contaminant transport mechanisms across environmental landscapes. This …
