Concern for Public Health: Periodontitis
Abstract: Periodontitis, a severe form of gum disease, erodes the bone that supports teeth and results in tooth loss. It is caused by bacterial infection and inflammation of the soft tissues around the teeth. About 70% of people 65 years of age and older are affected, on average. Red, bleeding, sensitive gums, foul breath, and receding gums are hallmark indications. Depending on the severity, a full dental examination, the insertion of …

Viruses and Their Role in Periodontal Diseases: A Review
Abstract: Periodontal diseases are a group of inflammatory conditions that primarily affect the gums and other tissues surrounding the teeth. Traditionally, these conditions were thought to be driven largely by bacterial infections, with the bacteria triggering an immune response that leads to inflammation and tissue damage. However, recent research has revealed that viruses also play a significant role in the development and progression of periodontal diseases. Viruses, such as Human Cytomegalovirus, …

CBCT: A Boon in Periodontics – A Review
Abstract: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that can be diagnosed mainly based on clinical signs and symptoms. Two-dimensional radiographs are valuable diagnostic tools as an adjunct to the clinical examination in assessing periodontal bone level. Two-dimensional images do not provide accurate bone levels due to its limitations like projection geometry, superimposition of adjacent anatomic structures, leading to the need for three-dimensional imaging that overcomes these limitations. The diagnosis and treatment …

Infective Endocarditis, Result of Chronic Periodontal Disease: A Real and Present Danger
Abstract: Introduction: Endocarditis is an inflammation of the endocardium, the inner lining of the heart and heart valves. It is usually caused by bacteria and is associated with high mortality and morbidity. It can result from transient bacteremia from the oral cavity. Streptococci are the primary colonizers of tooth surface and are instrumental in development of the complex oral biofilm, dental plaque. Streptococcus sanguinis is one of the abundant oral commensals …
