Rethinking Urban Design: Architectural Approaches to Walkability and Sprawl
Abstract: As cities stretch their concrete fingers across the landscape, architecture stands as both the problem and the solution. Like a master chess player, thoughtful architecture can reshape urban spaces, transforming car-centric sprawl into pedestrian-friendly havens. By crafting inviting streetscapes and mixed-use developments, architects weave a tapestry of walkable neighborhoods that pulse with life and connection. Streetscapes designed with wide sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, green spaces, and appropriate lighting further enhance the …

The Future of Open Streets, New York City
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid adjustments to New York City public spaces, leading to the implementation of the Open Streets program by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). This program transformed streets across the city into pedestrian- friendly zones by limiting vehicular traffic and providing much-needed outdoor space for residents to walk, bike, and socialize safely. While successful in some areas, the program faced significant challenges. These included equity issues, …

Smart Street Lighting Enabled by Wireless Sensor Networks: A Path to Energy Efficiency and Fault Monitoring
Abstract: The increasing demand for energy efficiency and smart city infrastructure has led to the adoption of innovative technologies such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in street lighting systems. This research explores the design and implementation of a smart street lighting system (SSLS) integrated with WSNs to enhance energy efficiency and enable real-time fault detection. The proposed system utilizes a network of wireless sensors to monitor ambient light levels, vehicular movement, …

Reduction of Air Pollutants of Urban Canyons through Management of Particulate Matters 2.5 in the Streets
Abstract: Urban canyons are long and high sky-scrappers closely to narrow streets result in very different microclimate challenges. These spaces often trap pollutants and restrict air circulation and intensify more retention of heat making them very uncomfortable for pedestrians. In order to resolve this issue a strong set of design guidelines and frameworks were needed which can balance out the human comfort and environmental aspects. This research studies strategies to improve …

Revitalizing Urban Canyons Through Innovative Thermal Strategies
Abstract: Urban canyons, environments very densely made up of tall buildings clustered on narrow streets, are treacherous when it comes to considerable heat retention and greatly increase wind speeds. The resulting conditions fuel the Urban Heat Island effect. That means urban canyons feel very hot and this of course harms both comfort and health of those who dwell in them. This research tackles the serious issue of discomfort due to heat …

Mixed use settlements in a metro city: Effects on people & context
Abstract: Mixed-use settlement is a building or a combination of buildings designed to functionally and physically integrate multiple uses such as commercial, institutional, recreational, and other uses along with residential uses. In such spaces, there are more opportunities for pedestrian activities due to the presence of a majority of the daily necessities at near distances. How public spaces are designed plays a significant role in affecting one’s mental state and sense …

Real-Time Object Detection and Tracking in Traffic Surveillance: Implementing Algorithms That Can Process Video Streams for Immediate Traffic Monitoring
Abstract: The rapid growth in urban development and traffic congestion calls for adopting high standards of traffic surveillance systems for monitoring. This paper reviews the current advancement and future trends of real-time object detection and tracking technology and its implications for traffic surveillance. Conventional approaches to traffic monitoring can provide more or less accurate data, but they are not easily scalable and cannot cope with rapidly changing conditions typical within urban …

Drona-Chariot: A Medical Equipment Carrier Drone
Abstract: Caring for trauma victims in harsh environments poses numerous difficulties, especially when a rescue effort is delayed. Human-containable medical equipment may also be consumed by a single victim, making replenishment impossible prior to evacuation, especially in long-term on-site supply scenarios. This project aims to build an unmanned autonomous aerial vehicle that successfully delivers remote places with life-sustaining medical supplies where it is impossible or impractical for vehicles or pedestrians to …

Street Light Automation and Fault Detection
Abstract: This paper addresses the concept, design, and implementation of an automated streetlighting system that uses Arduino technology for improving energy saving and detecting faults across the lamp. The system consists of several sensors: Light Dependent Resistors (LDR) as well as Infrared (IR) sensors, which are employed in the management to control the lighting of the streets and posts with surroundings and other conditions. Here, we use IR sensors for measuring …

Adaptive Street Illumination System with Energy Harvesting
Abstract: This paper presents an Adaptive Street Illumination System with Energy Harvesting, developed using an Arduino Uno microcontroller, Light Dependent Resistor (LDR), Infrared (IR) motion sensors, and piezoelectric transducers. The system addresses the significant energy wastage of conventional street lighting by activating LEDs only when motion is detected during nighttime. The LDR detects ambient light to determine day or night conditions, while IR sensors identify the presence of vehicles or pedestrians. …
