Effect of Compressibility on Undrained Bearing Pressure of Circular Footing Resting on Two-Layered Clay
Abstract: The present study aims to investigate the behavior of a circular foundation on layered clay of varying properties. There are several solutions for the bearing capacity of footings on two-layered clays, but none of them considered the compressibility of the strata. An underestimation of the soil bearing capacity is the main cause of failures. The typical difficulty in estimating the capacity of soil is its complicated behavior attributed to the …

Bearing Capacity of Skirted Ring Footing Resting on Dense Sand Overlying Soft Clay
Abstract: This study determines the ultimate bearing capacity of unskirted/skirted ring footing on dense sand of finite thickness on top of a layer of indefinite extent of soft clay under concentric vertical stress by means of finite element analysis. The thickness of an upper dense sand layer varied between 1 and 4 metres. The upper dense sand layers maintained a friction angle between 40° and 44°. The results indicate that the …

Characterization of Nano-Clay Reinforced Polymer Composites: Enhancing Performance for Extreme Applications
Abstract: This study investigates the mechanical, thermal, water absorption, and chemical resistance properties of nano-clay-reinforced polymer composites and polymer concrete. The incorporation of 1-5 wt% nano-clay resulted in a significant enhancement across all properties. Mechanical testing revealed a 42.86% increase in tensile strength (35 MPa to 50 MPa), 40% improvement in flexural strength (50 MPa to 70 MPa), and 46.67% rise in compressive strength (75 MPa to 110 MPa), attributed to …

Evaluate Variations of Deflections of Fixed Headed Pile from Non-Linear Load - Deflection Curve under Lateral Loading
Abstract: Lateral stability is the vital issue when the pile stands in several soft clay either sand layers. In reality, structure and soil both are show non-linear behaviors. Proper evaluation of non-linear behavior has not so essay in theory. However, slight non-linear effects are included in pile deflection from load-deflection curve of pressuremeter test in laboratory. Pressuremeter modulus is influenced deflection of fixed headed piles. Predicting the variations of non-linear load …

First experimental results on “clay and bentonite” mixtures for the waterproofing of a landfill in Northwestern Piedmont Region (NW Italy)
Abstract: We report on experimental results conducted on “clay and bentonite” mixtures for the waterproofing of a tank landfill located in Northwestern Piedmont Region (NW Italy). The geotechnical experimental tests on “clay and bentonite” mixtures were conducted in the laboratory first, with the aim of finding the optimum percentage of granular bentonite to be added to the clay and then, they were carried out in situ, in the tank, on the layer …

The Silent Mineral: Structural Complexity and Industrial Utility of Natural Kaolin
Abstract: Kaolin, a naturally occurring aluminosilicate clay predominantly comprising the mineral kaolinite (Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄), exhibits a 1:1 layered silicate structure that imparts distinctive physicochemical properties suitable for extensive industrial utilization. Deposits of kaolin are broadly classified into primary (residual) and secondary (sedimentary) categories, each defined by their geological origin and mineralogical features. The industrial processing of kaolin encompasses stages such as raw material extraction, beneficiation, and purification, aiming to optimize parameters including …

Role of Clay Liners in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills: A Review
Abstract: Rapid population growth has significantly increased the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in urban and suburban regions. Disposal of MSW in landfills without proper liner systems may lead to leachate migration and subsequent contamination of groundwater and surrounding soils. The use of liner systems at the base of landfills is therefore essential to minimize leachate percolation and protect the environment. Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) and compacted clay liners (CCLs) …

Comparative Analysis of Sustainable Materials in Road Construction: A Review
Abstract: The immediate need for sustainable infrastructure has driven research into new materials in road construction with the goal of reducing environmental degradation and enhancing resource efficiency. This review is a comparative analysis of four innovative technologies involving industrial and natural waste products: recycled aggregates from construction and demolition (C&D) waste, feldspar powder from lithium mining, stabilized dam sediments using eucalyptus ash, and calcium carbide residue (CCR) blended with dredged sludge. …

Evaluation of Equal Settlements of Geosynthetic Reinforced Piled Embankment
Abstract: Geosynthetic-Reinforced Pile-Supported Embankments (GRPSE) have emerged as an effective alternative to traditional geotechnical methods Constructing of piled embankments on soft soils. Design of pile-reinforced embankments and evaluation of plane of equal settlements is critical in the case of soft soils. If the embankment height exceeds the height of the plane of the equal settlements, settlements cannot be seen on the pavement, otherwise, differential settlements may be observed on the pavement. …

Utilization of Bentonite Clay Coupled with Potash for the Synthesis of Octadec-9-Enoic Acid Methyl Esters of Pongamia Pinnatatriglycerides
Abstract: Due to the ever increasing human population worldwide, especially in the developing countries across the world; renewable energy sources are in the primary focus of the scientists and researchers. In addition, the depletion of the reserves of the fossil fuels along with the increased consumption of the available reserves has led to wide spread global unrest. Complementing the above, there are significant environmental problems namely global warming due to increased …

Effect of the Position of Geotextiles on the Strength Characteristics of Subgrade Soil in Bituminous Pavements
Abstract: In the past 20 years, many new road improvement techniques have revolved around the use of geosynthetics. Geosynthetics may be used in those areas where the soil remains saturated part of the year or over clay and moist silty weak subgrade soils. The quality and life of pavement is greatly affected by the type of subgrade, subbase and base course materials. Subgrade soil is the bottom most layer of the …

Abstract: Soil is the foundation material, which supports loads from the overlying structure. Soil is the most widely used material in a highway system, either in its natural form or in a processed form. Also, all pavement structures eventually rest on soil foundation. The construction cost can be considerably decreased by selecting local materials including local soils for the construction of the lower layers of the pavement such as the sub-base …
