EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES (Seismic Zone IV): A critical review of literature
Abstract: This paper refers to the protection of civil structures (present in the seismic zone IV) against earthquake hazard. In urban India most of the conventional structures and existing structures don’t follow any building codes and doesn’t possess any seismic guard against earthquake hazards. Seismic tremors comprise one of the best risks of life and property on the earth. Because of abruptness of their event, they are least perceived and generally …

The Importance of Safety Engineering in the Design and Assessment of Foundations
Abstract: In safety engineering, ensuring the stability of structures under lateral loads is a critical aspect of foundation design. Lateral forces, such as wind, seismic activity, or other environmental pressures, exert overturning moments on columns, which must be carefully managed to prevent structural failure. To maintain stability, the overturning moment at the foundation base, generated by these lateral loads, must always be less than the restoring moment produced by the soil's …

Safety of Foundation of Building
Abstract: The design of a building's foundation requires careful consideration of the load intensity applied from the structure above. To ensure stability and safety, the foundation depth must be sufficient to support the loads effectively. For residential buildings, where the loads are relatively lower, a foundation base size of 2.5 × 2.5 meters or 3 × 3 meters is typically adequate. In contrast, for structures with significantly higher loads, such as …

Study of Diagonal Ties and Metal Plate as a Confining Reinforcement for RCC Short Columns
Abstract: Column is a most important structural member in the structural system. Even after the strong column weak beam theory used in the design of the structural member it has been observed that the many times structure collapsed due to the failure of the column. There are many reasons of the column failure but out of that major reason of the failure is ineffective confinement of the column specimen and uneven …

Strength Evaluation and Reveal the Reserved Strength of Confined RC Circular Column under Static Load
Abstract: AbstractThe strength of RC circular column is evaluated as per IS 456:2000 guideline and design charts of SP16. The secondary steel in the form of lateral ties or helical reinforcement is provided to suit the requirements of IS 456:2000 and IS 13920:2016. The secondary steel provides the confinement to the concrete and imparts ductility to the column. The strength of confined concrete is found more than the strength of 150 …

Performance Evaluation of Modified Concrete Incorporating Fly Ash, Silica Fume, Rice Husk Ash, and Calcium Nitrate
Abstract: The growing demand for sustainable and high-performance concrete has led to the incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and chemical admixtures to enhance mechanical and durability properties. This study investigates the effect of 15% fly ash, 10% silica fume, 10% rice husk ash, and 3% calcium nitrate as a partial replacement for cement in M25 and M30 grade concrete. Experimental results demonstrate that the modified concrete exhibited an increase in …

Optimizing Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene Fibre-Reinforced Coconut Shell Concrete
Abstract: This study investigates the impact of polypropylene (PP) fibre reinforcement on the mechanical properties of coconut shell (CS) concrete. The compressive strength of CS concrete is primarily governed by the strength of CS aggregates, with early-age failure attributed to poor bonding and later-stage failure influenced by aggregate strength. The incorporation of PP fibres significantly enhanced compressive, tensile, and flexural strength. At 28 days, compressive strength increased by 1.2–3.45% in CSF …

Study on the Response of Strengthening Strategies for Masonry-infilled Open Ground Storey Framed Building
Abstract: The strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings with masonry infill wall and with open ground storey is a very timely and significant topic because of the poor performance against seismic action. The absence of infill walls in the ground storey makes the ground storey less stiff and weaker than the all upper storys which results in a poor performance against lateral loads. Soft storey mechanism prevails in these cases …
