Abstract

Column is a most important structural member in the structural system. Even after the strong column weak beam theory used in the design of the structural member it has been observed that the many times structure collapsed due to the failure of the column. There are many reasons of the column failure but out of that major reason of the failure is ineffective confinement of the column specimen and uneven distribution of the load on the column. It is known that the traditional ties cannot provide effective confinement due to some limitations on the spacing and the concrete continuity. The basic need of providing the confinement to the column is to increase the load carrying capacity, enhancement of the ductility and improve the earthquake resistant capacity of the column. In this paper, investigation was carried out for the confinement of rectangular column using diagonal ties and metal plate as confining material and axial compressive strength, vertical and lateral deformation is compared with the column without using any confining reinforcement. From the test conducted on nine rectangular short columns it is observed that the axial compressive strength of the confine columns increases significantly as compared to traditional column it was also observed that the failure of confined column using diagonal ties and metal plates shows more ductile failure and its capacity to resist the lateral and vertical deformation is also increased. From the literature review it can be concluded that various means of confining reinforcement are used but study shown in this paper is one the good means of confinement and proves to be effective means of confinement for short rectangular RCC columns.
