Geotechnical Analysis and Performance Evaluation of Subgrade Materials in Road Construction
Abstract: Geotechnical engineering plays a pivotal role in the design, construction, and long-term maintenance of infrastructure, particularly in road construction, where subgrade conditions are directly linked to pavement performance, durability, and overall structural integrity. The performance of a road is heavily influenced by the geotechnical properties of the subgrade, making it essential to thoroughly assess these properties in the planning and construction phases. This study comprehensively investigates the geotechnical characteristics and …

Stone Waste as a Soil Stabilizer
Abstract: The rapid expansion of construction, mining, and stone-processing industries has led to the large-scale generation of stone waste materials such as marble powder, granite slurry, quarry fines, and sandstone residues. The indiscriminate disposal of these wastes poses serious environmental concerns, including land degradation, dust pollution, and contamination of surface and groundwater resources. At the same time, weak and problematic soils continue to present major challenges in geotechnical engineering applications, particularly …

Impact of Red Stone Dust and Polymer Fabric in Enhancing the Properties of Black Cotton Soil
Abstract: To enhance the mechanical properties of problematic black cotton soil, engineers are focusing on reinforcing the soil with geosynthetic materials. This attention is particularly directed towards improving the strength characteristics of black cotton soil, given its inherent challenges associated with volume changes and plasticity. In this comprehensive study, red stone dust waste is introduced in varying percentages ranging from 5% to 35% to stabilize the black cotton soil. The goal …

In-depth Evaluation of the CBR Method in Flexible Pavement Design
Abstract: The California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value of the subgrade is a crucial parameter utilized in the design of flexible pavements, as recommended by the Indian Roads Congress (IRC). The choice of materials used in constructing the pavement can significantly influence its overall design and performance. Pavements play an essential role in ensuring traffic flows smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Generally, pavements are categorized into two types: flexible and rigid. Flexible pavements …

Optimization of Fly Ash and Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (FA-GBFS) Mixes for Flexible Pavements
Abstract: This study investigates the compaction, strength, and permeability characteristics of fly ash (FA) stabilized with granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) to determine the optimal mix proportions for geotechnical applications. Standard Proctor compaction, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR), and permeability tests were conducted on FA-GBFS mixtures, with GBFS content varying from 10 to 50% by dry weight. The results indicate that increasing GBFS content enhances the maximum dry …

The Effect of Quicklime on The CBR Value of Soft Soil Stabilized with Nickel Slag and Aluminium Hydroxide
Abstract: The construction of road structures on soft soils is prone to structural damage due to the low bearing capacity of the soil under the load imposed by vehicles. Chemical stabilization is a popular method used to increase the bearing capacity of soft soils. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of soft soil stabilization using a mixture of lime, nickel slag, and aluminium hydroxide to enhance soil bearing capacity. The …

Stabilization of Reinforced Earth Wall Backfill Using Steel Slag and Recycled PET Fiber: A Composite Material Approach
Abstract: Reinforced Earth (RE) walls are widely used in infrastructure due to their structural efficiency and ease of construction. However, they typically require high-quality granular backfill, which may not be readily available or cost-effective in many regions. This study investigates the potential of utilizing locally available sandy clay soil stabilized with industrial and plastic waste materials specifically 20% steel slag and 0.75% shredded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers, as an alternative backfill …

Improving Black Cotton Soil with Sodium Hydroxide and Fly Ash: An Assessment of Optimum Moisture Content, Dry Density, and California Bearing Ratio
Abstract: This study investigates the stabilization of Black Cotton Soil (BCS), an expansive clayey soil primarily composed of montmorillonite minerals, using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and fly ash. Due to its high plasticity and significant volume changes with moisture, BCS is challenging for construction purposes. Adding NaOH and fly ash can potentially improve the soil's moisture tolerance, compressibility, and reduce its plasticity, making it more suitable for structural applications. The research evaluates …
