The Use of Satellite Imagery in Estimating Aboveground and Belowground Biomass of Aquatic Vegetation, The Food Source of Waterfowl
Abstract: 800x600 In this research we studied the possibilities to estimate the biomass of aquatic vegetation in a shallow lake using IKONOS image. IKONOS-2 image, with one infrared and three visible bands, was obtained on the 19th of August 2005. The study was carried out in the Lauwersmeer (The Netherlands) that Bewick’s swans use as an autumn staging site to forage on the belowground biomass of fennel pondweed. This research gave …

GIS and Remote Sensing in Mapping Aquatic Vegetation, The Food Source of Waterfowl
Abstract: Carrying out time and cost effective field surveys has always been a great concern of ecological studies of a large spatial scale. We studied the possibilities to map the distribution of submerged aquatic vegetation in a shallow lake using satellite imagery. We also went further to investigate the relationship of the predicted biomass per creek and bird densities. The study was carried out with an IKONOS image of the Lauwersmeer …

Monitoring Aquatic Vegetation Distribution in Chilika Lagoon with G-tech
Abstract: Chilika Lagoon with a water spread area varies from 1,144 km2 of in the monsoon season to 780 km2 in the winter dry season (National Wetland Atlas, Orissa) of a large wetlands eco-system. The lagoon had been facing with different problems, like shifting of the mouth, decrease in salinity level, shrinkage of water spread area due to sedimentation, increasing the fresh water weeds etc. To monitor the aquatic vegetation distribution …

Geospatial Analysis of Wetlands in Jharkhand Using Multi-temporal Satellite Data
Abstract: The present study was carried out to study the wetlands of Jharkhand using pre-monsoon and post-monsoon satellite data. Different indices were used to quantify the seasonal extent of wetlands, aquatic vegetation and turbidity levels of wetlands. Wetlands occupying an area smaller than 2.25 ha were identified separately as small wetlands. The total number of wetlands identified in Jharkhand was 2436 covering an area of 1568.27 sq. km. Small wetlands were …

Assessment of Surface Water Quality in Different Habitats of Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary Ramsar Site, Gujarat, India
Abstract: Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is the only Ramsar Site in the State of Gujarat in India. It is the largest natural, freshwater inland wetland of Gujarat. This wetland supports high diversity and population of waterbirds and other aquatic organisms. The reason for such a high population of aquatic organisms attracted to this area is due to the diverse habitats and environmental conditions occurring in this area. GEER Foundation had conducted …

Facile Fabrication and Characterization of Novel Sterculia Gum–graft-poly(n-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) Hydrogel for Efficient Removal of Cationic Dyes from Aqueous Solution
Abstract: Water is indispensable component of life. Contamination of water is a severe problem that affects human health, aquatic vegetation, and fauna. Aside from various effluents, a variety of cationic dyes generated by industrial effluents contributes significantly to water contamination. In this study, a sterculia gum graft-poly(n-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) hydrogel was made using a graft copolymerization technique with N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide as a crosslinker, ammonium persulphate as an initiator, and tetramethylethylenediamine as an accelerator to …

Seasonal Monitoring of Waterbirds of Khijadiya Wetland in Jamnagar District of Gujarat, India
Abstract: A study was conducted by Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation on waterbirds of Khijadiya Wetland from 2016 to 2018 covering all the major seasons. A total of 62 waterbird species were recorded that belonged to 16 families. Among all the families, maximum number (i.e., 13 species) of species belonged to the Anatidae family (i.e., the family of ducks, geese and swans) and Ardidae family (i.e., the family of …

Studies of Jalpalak to evaluate its phytochemical and cytoprotection properties
Abstract: Ipomoea aquatica, commonly known as water spinach, is a semi-aquatic, tropical plant. It is cultivated as a vegetable and originated first in Southeast Asia. It grows abundantly near waterways and requires little to no care. The current review summarizes the various studies done to evaluate the nutritional, phytochemical and pharmacological aspect of water spinach, lpomoea aquatica forssk, commonly known as Jalpalak in Hindi. The review has been done by intensive …

Comparison of Vegetation and Water Indices Calculated on IRS LISS-3 and IRS-P6 AWiFS Data
Abstract: Remote sensing technologies provide stereo images which allow topographic mapping and the functionality gives not only static display but also analytical process. Vegetation indices and water indices have been proposed over last decades as the most suitable vegetation and water indices for a given remote sensing application. In this research study, the suitability and results show these indices (SVI, NDVI, SWI and NDWI) can apply on LISS-3 and Awifs, more …

Flower Morphology of Four Gladiolus Genotypes
Abstract: Angiosperms are plants which have covered fruits as compared to gymnosperms. Today these plants dominate the world in the aquatic, terrestrial as well as in aerial environment. Flora of any area determines types of vegetation over there, in addition, types of the animals in the area which constitute the ecosystem over there. In the community analysis of any area many kinds of the measurement are taken as parameters. In assessment …
