Automated Blood Cell Counting and Disease Identification Using Image Processing: Implications for Polymer Composite- Based Biomedical Diagnostic Devices
Abstract: Accurate quantification of blood cells is central to clinical decision-making and to the performance of emerging polymer composite–based diagnostic platforms. This work presents a cost-effective, image-processing pipeline for automated counting of red blood cells (including overlapping cells), white blood cells, and platelets from Leishman-stained peripheral blood smears, and articulates its relevance to polymer composite microfluidic and biosensor devices. Implemented in Python with OpenCV, the workflow performs grayscale conversion, median/Gaussian denoising, …

Polymer Chemistry of Ion-Selective Membranes and Hydrogels for Clinical Sodium Sensing: Advances and Perspectives
Abstract: Accurate and timely monitoring of serum sodium levels is critical in diagnosing and managing hyponatremia, a common and potentially life-threatening electrolyte disorder. Recent advances in polymer chemistry have driven the development of ion-selective membranes and hydrogels tailored for clinical sodium sensing, bridging the gap between material science and biomedical diagnostics. This review critically examines the design and synthesis of polymeric materials—focusing on block copolymers, conductive polymers, and stimuli-responsive hydrogels—used to …

Ocular Films as a Drug Delivery System Against Fungal Infections: Current Insights and Future Directions
Abstract: Fungal infections of the eye, including keratitis, endophthalmitis, and blepharitis, represent a challenging class of ocular diseases due to their potential for vision loss and the limited efficacy of existing treatments. These infections are caused by a range of pathogenic fungi, such as Aspergillus, Candida, and Fusarium species, and often require long-term therapeutic intervention. Conventional topical antifungal therapies, such as eye drops and ointments, suffer from poor ocular bioavailability due …

A Study on AI-Enhanced Environmental Toxicology: Sensor-Driven Predictive Framework
Abstract: Traditional environmental toxicology relies heavily on labor-intensive, often retrospective, sampling and analysis, limiting our understanding of dynamic pollutant behaviors and their real-time impact on ecosystems and human health. This study presents a novel, integrated framework leveraging advanced sensor networks and artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the monitoring, assessment, and predictive modeling of environmental contaminants. We deployed a sophisticated array of multi-parameter sensors (e.g., electrochemical, optical, biosensors for heavy metals, organic …

Mycotoxins in Grains: Toxicological Impact, Detection Strategies, and Public Health Implications
Abstract: Many types of fungi create mycotoxins, which contaminate cereal grains like wheat, maize, rice, and barley. Even at low doses, aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, and deoxynivalenol are harmful to humans and animals. This study covers mycotoxin occurrence, detection, toxicological consequences, and public health concerns in grain-based food systems. Advanced analytical methods, like LC–MS, ELISA, and biosensors, are discussed for their sensitivity and routine monitoring applications. Experimental and epidemiological studies analyze chronic …

Personalized Therapy Using Drug Delivery Devices
Abstract: The persistent challenge in modern medicine lies in inter-patient heterogeneity, rendering standardized drug dosing protocols suboptimal for many chronic conditions. Traditional pharmacokinetics fail to account for real-time biological fluctuations, leading to cycles of ineffective treatment or dose-limiting toxicity. This paper explores the critical intersection of advanced drug delivery devices (DDDs) and personalized medicine, positioning these technologies as the vital link translating genomic and biological data into tangible, patient- specific interventions. …

Thin Film Technology in Sensor Manufacturing – A Technical Discussion
Abstract: Thin‑film technology has become the cornerstone of modern sensor manufacturing, enabling the convergence of miniaturisation, multifunctionality, and cost‑effective mass production. This paper surveys the latest advances in deposition techniques—ranging from magnetron sputtering and chemical vapour deposition to atomic‑layer deposition (ALD) and ink‑jet‑printed sol‑gel processes—and examines how their unique material‑control capabilities translate into performance gains across the sensor spectrum (chemical, physical, and bio‑sensing). By integrating nanoscale thickness control (≤ 10 nm) …

Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Personalized Medicine: Emerging Clinical Perspectives
Abstract: The convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine has transformed contemporary healthcare by enabling data-driven clinical decision-making, individualized therapeutic interventions, and predictive diagnostics. However, despite remarkable advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), the widespread adoption of AI in healthcare remains constrained by the “black-box” nature of many computational systems. Clinicians, regulatory agencies, and patients increasingly demand transparency, interpretability, and trustworthiness in AI-guided medical recommendations. Explainable Artificial …

Lysogenic Phage Cocktails with Embedded Fluorophores for Field Wound Diagnostics.
Abstract: Rapid and accurate detection of wound infections in field settings remains a critical challenge in emergency and military medicine. Conventional microbiological diagnostics are time- consuming and laboratory-dependent. Bacteriophages, particularly lysogenic phages, offer high specificity toward bacterial hosts and can be engineered as diagnostic tools. A translational framework was developed for lysogenic bacteriophage cocktails embedded with fluorophore reporters for rapid, point-of-care wound diagnostics. Mechanisms of phage infection, lysogenic integration, and fluorophore …
