Abstract

Using the stir casting technique, an attempt was undertaken to manufacture an aluminium alloy (AA) 8088 matrix reinforced with 0, 1, 3, 5 wt% TiB2 particles. The mechanical characteristics and wear behaviour of the material were investigated. To determine the level of improvement, hardness and tensile characteristics were measured before and after the addition of TiB2 particles. To validate the improvement in wear resistance, a pin-on-disc device was used to assess wear behaviour. The results showed that adding TiB2 reinforcement improved the mechanical characteristics significantly. The unfilled aluminium matrix has ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 133 MPa and yield tensile strength (YTS) of 35 MPa. Whereas 152 MPa and 47 MPA were achieved at 5 wt% TiB2 nanocomposites which resulted in 14.3 and 34.3% improvement, respectively. The hardness was observed 57 BHN and 72 BHN at 0 wt% and 5 wt% TiB2 respectively, resulting in an improvement of 26.3%.
