Effect of Alccofine Addition on the Index and Engineering Properties of Bentonite

Abstract

This paper presents the results of Atterberg’s limit, compaction, free swell index, and unconfined compressive strength test conducted on bentonite stabilized with alccofine. The alccofine content was varied from 0 % to 2 % by dry weight of the bentonite. The specimens for the unconfined compressive strength were prepared at optimum moisture content and maximum dry unit weight obtained from the compaction test and these specimens were cured up to a period of 28 days. The results of this study reveal that the unconfined compressive strength of bentonite increased with the increase in alccofine content as well as with the increase in curing period. Further the free swell index of the bentonite decreased appreciably with the increase in alccofine content in bentonite. The outcome of this study reveals that alccofine can be considered as an additive for the stabilization of the expansive soils.
