Bearing Capacity of Skirted Ring Footing Resting on Dense Sand Overlying Soft Clay

Abstract: This study determines the ultimate bearing capacity of unskirted/skirted ring footing on dense sand of finite thickness on top of a layer of indefinite extent of soft clay under concentric vertical stress by means of finite element analysis. The thickness of an upper dense sand layer varied between 1 and 4 metres. The upper dense sand layers maintained a friction angle between 40° and 44°. The results indicate that the …

Bearing Capacity of Double Box Shaped Skirted Footings on Sand

Abstract: The double-box-shaped footing with and without skirt and sand-resting pressure settlement behavior was discussed in this paper. Different parameters are normalised skirt depth (0.25 to 1.5), relative sand density (30 to 60 percent) and sand footing interface state (partially rough and rough). Results of this study showed that a general and local shear failure was observed at a relative density of 50 percent and 60 percent, and 30 percent and …

Effect of Alccofine and Tyre buffings on Engineering Properties of Sand

Abstract: In the present paper, the effect of alccofine and tyre buffings addition on the compression and bearing ratio of sand are evaluated through laboratory study. On the basis of compaction test, a reference mix composed of sand + 12 % alccofine + 2 % tire buffing was selected for further study. The unconfined compression and bearing ratio test on the reference mix was then carried out by curing the sample …

Leakage Rate Prediction through Composite Liner due to Geomembrane Defect using Neural Network

Abstract: The paper presents the leakage rate prediction using artificial neural network from the liner made of soil and geomembrane. The defect in the geomembrane considered was having different shapes. Three different shapes such as square, rectangular and circular of the defect have been considered. The input variables considered for the artificial neural network (ANN) were (i) head on the top of the soil (ii) area of the defect (iii) hydraulic …

Soft Computing Based Prediction of Deviator Stress of Waste Plastic Reinforced Sand

Abstract: In the recent past, the soft computing techniques have received a significant attention for solution of the geotechnical stability problems. Following the trend, the present study tries to explore the use of different soft computing techniques such as random forest regression, support vector machines (SVM) RBF kernel, SVM poly kernel and M5P model tree for the prediction of deviator stress of sand reinforced with waste plastic strips. The deviator stress …

Effect of Alccofine Addition on the Index and Engineering Properties of Bentonite

Abstract: This paper presents the results of Atterberg’s limit, compaction, free swell index, and unconfined compressive strength test conducted on bentonite stabilized with alccofine. The alccofine content was varied from 0 % to 2 % by dry weight of the bentonite. The specimens for the unconfined compressive strength were prepared at optimum moisture content and maximum dry unit weight obtained from the compaction test and these specimens were cured up to …

Effect of Different Dosages of Saline Water on the Index and Engineering Properties of Bentonite

Abstract: The paper presents the effect of different dosages of saline water on the index and engineering properties of bentonite. The various tests conducted were consistency limits, free swell index, compaction and unconfined compressive strength. The saline water solution was prepared by varying the salt content from 5 to 40 gms per litre of distilled water. The specimens were prepared at their maximum dry unit weight and optimum moisture content. The …
