Investigation on Plant Heparanase and its Inhibitors
Abstract: Heparanase is an endoglycosidase which cleaves heparan sulfate (HS) and hence participates in degradation and remodelling of extracellular matrix (ECM). It further regulates multiple biological activities that enhance tumour growth, angiogenesis and metastasis. Heparanase expression is enhanced in almost all cancers examined including various carcinomas, sarcomas and haematological malignancies. In the present article, heparanase enzyme in plants and its activity against inhibitors was described. Here the heparanase enzyme and the …

Oncology in Ayurveda: Concept and Management
Abstract: Cancer is known to mankind since long. The disease has been believed to be difficult to cure, due to uncontrolled cell division. Disease has been described in details as Arbuda in ayurvedic classics. There are four-fold treatments for Arbuda viz., Aushadha (medicinal management with medicinal herbs, polyherbal combinations and herbomineral compounds); Kshara (alkali treatment); Agni Karma; and Shastra (surgical removal of tumour). The selection of medicaments or process depends on …

Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of Parotid: A Case Report
Abstract: A 14-year-old girl presented with a painless, mobile, and firm swelling in the left parotid gland in infra-auricular region. The fine needle aspiration revealed a mucoepidermoid tumour. Histopathological report suggestive of a mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The presence of a parotid mass with progressive growth in a child could correspond to a mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Mechanistic Studies on Aziridinyl-Benzoquinones in Cultured Tumour Cells
Abstract: This study compares the anti-tumour effects of NQO1 activated drug RH1 (2, 5-diaziridinyl-3 - hydoxymethyl-6-methyl-1, 4-benzoquinone) with a lipophilic ester derivative Es5 on the isogenic cell lines MDA 468 and MDA 468 NQO1 which differs only in expression of wtNQO1. A 39- fold enhancement of growth inhibitory activity was seen in NQO1 expressing cells compared the NQO1 null cells for the Es5 compared to the 25- fold increase seen for …

Assessment of Antibacterial Potentialities of Diacetaldehyde Terpenoid Isolated from Curcuma Caesia Roxb. Against a Panel of Pathogenic Bacteria
Abstract: Assessment of antibacterial potentialities of a diacetaldehyde terpenoid was performed in this paper against a panel of pathogenic bacterial strains. This terpenoid was isolated from Curcuma caesia Roxb. and found to have several kinds of biological activities like antibacterial, antifungal and antitumour. In this experiment it was found that the terpenoid can inhibit the growth of bacterium at 150 to 200 μg/ml of concentrations. Hence, this terpenoid can be used …
