Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Approaches for Soil Salinization Assessment: A Comprehensive Review
Abstract: Soil salinization, a critical environmental challenge, significantly impacts land productivity, agricultural yields, and contributes to desertification, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Early detection and effective management of soil salinity are essential for sustainable agriculture and land management. Remote sensing (RS) and geographic information systems (GIS) have emerged as indispensable tools for mapping, monitoring, and analyzing soil salinity over vast areas. RS provides multi-temporal and multi-spectral data that helps identify …

A multi-index remote sensing analysis for Characterizing water stress, and environmental indicators in Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat, India
Abstract: Water scarcity is a critical concern in arid and semi-arid regions, with implications for ecological stability, public health, and sustainable resource management. The Girnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat, presents a case where ecological fragility intersects with cultural and religious pressures. This study employs satellite remote sensing and GIS-based approach to characterize water stress parameters within the sanctuary. Key spectral indices along with Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) were integrated through …

Ecological and Biomonitoring Studies of Freshwater with Reference to Selected Phytoplankton Species of Manar Reservoir, Maharashtra
Abstract: Freshwater reservoirs play a crucial role in supporting domestic, agricultural, and fisheries requirements, particularly in semi-arid regions of Maharashtra. Rivers and the surface water are important sources of drinking and several other usages. Aquatic ecosystems are vital in the supply of nutritious food and food source supplementation. Therefore, we selected to study the role of plankton within the aquatic ecosystem systematically here. Plankton are very small organisms; they are of …

Performance Improvement of Standalone Solar PV Pumping System Using Supercapacitor
Abstract: Two of the most pressing issues when it comes to rural communities of arid and semi-arid regions are water shortage and unstable grid electricity. Standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) pumping systems have been introduced as a clean, low maintenance alternative to diesel powered pumps, but their performance is limited by intermittent nature of sunlight and limited energy buffering capacity of conventional batteries. The paper is an investigation into the incorporation of …

Enhancing Solar Water Pumping in Arid Regions with Hybrid Super Capacitor and Battery Storage
Abstract: Water scarcity and unreliable grid electricity are two of the most pressing challenges facing rural communities in arid and semiarid regions. Standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) pumping systems have emerged as a clean, lowmaintenance alternative to dieselpowered pumps, yet their performance is constrained by the intermittent nature of sunlight and the limited energybuffering capacity of conventional batteries. This study investigates the integration of a highpower, highenergydensity supercapacitor bank as a hybrid …

Integrated Water Balance and Water Stress Index–Based Sustainability Assessment of a Semi-Arid Island Ecosystem
Abstract: Freshwater scarcity is an increasingly critical challenge in semi-arid island environments due to limited natural water availability, high dependence on seasonal rainfall, growing population pressure, and expanding agricultural activities. Island ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to water stress because they often lack perennial surface water sources and rely heavily on groundwater recharge during short and highly variable monsoon periods. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of water demand, post-monsoon water availability, …

Integrated Remote Sensing Indices for Assessing Pre-Monsoon Water Scarcity Vulnerability in a Semi-Arid Coastal Ecosystem: A Case Study of Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat, India
Abstract: Freshwater availability fundamentally shapes the structure and function of dryland ecosystems, where evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation for most of the year. Protected areas in semiarid regions face intensifying hydrological stress from climate variability, growing wildlife populations, and resident human communities, yet systematic spatial assessments of water scarcity remain scarce for many critical habitats. The Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in coastal Gujarat, India, has recently become a secondary home for the endangered Asiatic …

Anti-Soiling Coating Technologies for PV Panels Under Dust Storm Conditions
Abstract: Background Deployment of photovoltaics (PV) in arid and semi-arid areas where there is ample sunlight has been increasing quickly because of their great solar irradiation. The rising number of dust storms, as well as depositing particulate matter to the air, have caused a significant decrease in energy production due to reduced transmittance of light through the surface of the PV panel from the dust on the panel’s surface. This has …
