Crystallinity of commercial carbon fibers from X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies
Abstract: Sized carbon fibers have commercial significance. Such carbon fibers serves has excellent reinforcing material with the polymer resin filler matrix leading to the formation of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRCs). Polarized carbon fibers find applications in the realms of health, energy, environment, defence, catalysis and smart materials. For brevities sake, the focus of the current research paper is only on the structural characterization of carbon fibers using XRD. The structure …

Raman Spectroscopy for The Determination of Relative Crystallinity of Carbon Fibers
Abstract: Analogous to X-ray diffraction technique, the light scattering technique discovered by Sir CV Raman has great potential in quantifying the crystallinity of new materials, like the highly crystalline pitch based carbon fibers (NX90 and NX100). For comparison the Raman spectra of polyacrylonitrile based carbon fibers (T700SC) were also recorded. From the Raman spectral analysis, it was found that the pitch based carbon fibers exhibit far far higher degree of crystallinity …

Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA) Based Epoxy Sizing Agent Induces Surface Polarity in Carbon Fibers†
Abstract: Determination of the chemical structure and composition of the sizing agent is a challenge as its concentration is low, varying in the range from ~0.5 wt.% (for polyacrylonitrile, PAN, based carbon fibers) to ~1 wt.% (for pitch-based carbon fibers). Moreover, such a piece of knowledge is vital for designing compatible polymer matrices to prepare CFRPs for diverse applications. As a result, the sizing layer that is coated on the carbon …

Mechanical Characteristic Analysis of Five-Layer Carbon-Carbon Composite Material
Abstract: The current study investigates the fabrication and mechanical strength of five-layer carbon-carbon composite. The strong five-layer carbon-carbon composite material with high strength and modulus is made of a raw material called precursors. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) method is used in the fabrication of carbon fiber. The characteristics of the resulting carbon material depend on the composition and structure of the precursor. A sheet of 50 x 40 cm five-layer carbon-carbon composite …
