Evaluation of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Larvae Meal as an Alternative Protein Source in Broiler Chicken Diets: Effect on Carcass and Eating Quality of Broiler Chicken
Abstract: An experiment was conducted using broiler finishers to determine the effects of black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) in broiler rations on the sensory and carcass characteristics of the birds. A total of eight broiler chickens were randomly selected from 40 birds fed diets containing 0% (control) and 33% replacement of fish meal with BSFLM. At 56 days of age, eight birds were slaughtered after 8-hour feed withdrawal, dressed, eviscerated …

Effect of Scent Leaf (Ocimum Gratissimum) Supplemented Diets on Growth Performance, Carcass and Gut Microbial Integrity of Broiler Chickens
Abstract: The growth performance, carcass composition, and gut E. coli and Lactobacillus loads of broiler chickens fed supplemented scent leaf (Ocimum gratissimum) diets were evaluated over five weeks. Fresh leaves of scent leaf were harvested, thoroughly washed, and shade-dried to a moisture content of about 12% and further ground into powder form for use as feed supplement. Ninety 21-day-old chicks were randomly selected and assigned five dietary treatments in triplicate lots. …

Evaluation of False Yam (Icacina oliviformis) Seed Extract as Substitute for Antibiotics on Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Broiler Chickens
Abstract: An experiment was carried out using broiler chickens to determine the effects of false yam seed extract on their growth performance. One hundred and fifty (150) chicks (Cobb strain) were selected and randomly divided into 15 groups of 10 birds each. Fresh false yam seed chips were soaked for 3 days (1 part of fresh seed to 2 parts of water) and extract was decanted and sieved through a fine …

Enhanced Bioavailability of Nutrients in Pelleted Feeds: Implications for Performance, Health, and Meat Quality of the Broiler Chicken
Abstract: The optimization of nutrient bioavailability in pelleted feeds is crucial for enhancing the performance, health, and meat quality of broiler chickens. This review explores the complex mechanisms by which pelleting improves nutrient availability, including physical changes in feed structure, thermal and chemical effects, and the reduction of anti-nutritional factors. It also highlights the significance of improved gut health and digestion, which contributes to enhanced nutrient absorption and utilization. The paper …

Utilization of Different Fiber Feedstuffs in Poultry
Abstract: The difficulty of using high fiber raw materials and ways to improve their nutrient availability is always a hot topic. However, fiber is functionally important for poultry performance, health, and welfare. Although some fiber is indigestible, it plays an important role in the digestive system. It influences gizzard function as well as digesta passage rate. The latest researches precisely recommend 3–4% crude fiber for poultry for a greater period while …

Strategies to Minimize Heat Stress in Broiler and Layer Chickens
Abstract: Heat stress is one of the most important thermal environmental factors challenging broiler and layer production throughout world. Negative effects of heat stress on broilers and layer production range from reduced growth and egg production to reduced egg quality. Heat stress is more in chickens with high production performance and more feed conversion efficiency. Prolonged exposure to hot weather will lead to imbalance of acid-base equilibrium in body, decreases blood …

Negative Perceptions of Broiler Consumers: Exploring Societal Attitudes, Cultural Ethics, and Health Concerns for Sustainable Production
Abstract: Negative perceptions of broiler chicken remain a significant barrier to its acceptance and market sustainability. This study investigates the societal attitudes, cultural ethics, and health concerns that influence consumer perceptions and challenges the broiler industry. Ethical issues, including animal welfare and perceived unnatural rearing practices, often fuel consumer distrust. Health concerns such as antibiotic residues, growth hormone usage (often misunderstood), and lower nutritional value compared to native breeds further exacerbate …

Rethinking Stocking Density in Broilers: Assessments of Physiological, Behavioral, and Environmental Impacts
Abstract: High stocking density in broiler production is a common practice aimed at maximizing space utilization and economic returns. However, it poses significant challenges to the performance, health, and welfare of the birds. This study explores the multifaceted impacts of elevated stocking density on broiler chickens, highlighting the physiological, behavioral, and environmental factors that deteriorate their overall well-being. Increased stocking density is associated with reduced growth rates, poor feed conversion efficiency, …
