Antimicrobial Activity of Partially Purified Extract of Streptomyces Sp. on MRSA
Abstract: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of increasingly prevalent, difficult and expensive-to-treat nosocomial as well as community-acquired infections worldwide. Accurate and rapid detection of MRSA in a clinical laboratory is of utmost importance to avoid treatment failure as these strains are multidrug resistant and there are limited options to treat these infections. Hence, exploring newer antibacterial substances is the need of the hour. In this study, phenotypically and …

Optimization of Media to Improve Macrolide Antibiotic Production while Minimizing Impurities
Abstract: Immunomycin is a fermentation product of Streptomyces hygroscopicus var ascomycetes. Macrolide produced from Streptomyces hygroscopicus has superior activity when compared to cyclosporine. The immunosuppressant activity is useful in treatment of autoimmune diseases, as well as infectious diseases. The serious side effects of cyclosporine treatment include kidney failure, liver damage and ulcers, so there is a need for new safer and more effective method of treatment. The present study was carried …

Antagonistic Potentials of Actinomycetes Isolated from Coastal Area of Niger Delta against Citrus sinensis (Sweet Orange) and Lycopersicum esculentum (Tomato) Fungal Pathogens
Abstract: The antagonistic potentials of actinomycetes isolated from coastal area of Niger Delta against Citrus sinensis (sweet orange) and Lycopersicum esculentum (tomato) fungal pathogens were investigated. Marine sediment and water samples were collected from ten (10) different points from Onne Light Flow Terminal Seaport situated in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. The actinomycetes were isolated on Glycerol Starch Casein Nitrate Agar using spread plate technique as well as …

Antibiotic Susceptibility of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Bifidobacteria
Abstract: Three Lactobacillus (LAB) strains, namely, LAB-3, LAB-11 and LAB-21 (species L. casei) and three Bifidobacteriam (BB) strains, namely, Bifi-11, Bifi-19 and Bifi-20 (species B. infantis) were grown in MRS broth and TPY broth, respectively. They were subjected to susceptibility tests against a range of antibiotics. The isolates were resistant to streptomycin, vancomycin, bacitracin, cephalothine, ceftizoxime, ceftriazon, cloxacillin, clindamycin, cefuroxime, cefuxime and tetracycline and kanamycin but susceptible to ampicillin, amoxicillin and …

Polymer-Coated Composite Granules of Clarithromycin: Design, Characterization, and Functional Evaluation for Taste Masking and Antibacterial Performance
Abstract: Background: Masking the unpleasant taste of clarithromycin is essential to improve patient adherence, especially among pediatric and elderly groups. However, enhancing palatability while maintaining its antibacterial effectiveness remains a significant formulation challenge. This study focused on developing polymer-coated clarithromycin granules (B1–B10) using novel non-sugar-based polymers and assessing their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus Methods: Clarithromycin granules were produced using a fluidized bed coating technique with non-saccharide polymers, specifically Eudragit E-100 …

Investigations on Microbial Growth Inhibition by Carbon Based Nanomaterials
Abstract: We have studied the antimicrobial activity of carbon-based nanomaterials e.g. graphene oxide with their mechanism of action. We have synthesized the graphene oxide using modified Hummer’s method from high purity graphite precursors. The microstructures and morphology of graphene-based materials have been studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The specific surface area and porosity analysis of graphene oxide are analyzed using …
