Responses of Phytoplankton Community Structure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Constituents in Imo River, Oyigbo, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Abstract: Phytoplankton perform a pivotal role in the food chain and serve as indicator species in environmental studies. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic group of divergent chemicals with two or more aromatic rings coalesce side by side representing serious persistent organic contaminants posing environmental risk to aquatic life and human. Imo River receive contaminants from illegal oil refinery. The study was conducted to assess the responses of phytoplankton community structure …

Application of Monod and Finite Element Models for Groundwater Cleanup in the Niger Delta Area of Nigeria
Abstract: The Niger Delta region of Nigeria, known for its rich biodiversity and extensive oil and gas exploration activities, faces significant environmental degradation, including groundwater contamination. This study investigates the application of Monod kinetics and Finite Element Models (FEM) in the cleanup of groundwater contamination in the Niger Delta. Specifically, the research integrates Monod models to understand microbial degradation rates in contaminated aquifers and FEM to simulate the groundwater flow and …

Microplastics Contaminated Mullet (Mugil cephalus) (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Lower Forcados River, Burutu, Delta State, Nigeria
Abstract: The increasing contamination of the environment by microplastics (MP) in various forms is a consequence of modern lifestyle advancements and has emerged as a significant environmental hazard. The digestive tracts of 36 specimens of the economic mullet (Mugil cephalus) were investigated between March 2022 and March 2023 from the lower Forcados River, Burutu, Delta State, Nigeria. A total of 96 MP particles were extracted from 18 fish out of the …

Seasonal Variations of Air Quality Measures In Warri and Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria.
Abstract: Air quality in Urban Cities like Warri and Effurun has been deteriorating over time. The distribution levels of air pollutants in the Warri and Effurun environments may be related to both natural and man-made factors. In addition to evaluating the quality of rainwater with regard to pH, heavy metals (Fe, Pb, Cd, As, Hg, CU, Zn), and some anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, CO32-), this project study aims to investigate, using …

History of the Conflict and Environmental Pollution in Ogoni Land
Abstract: This essay evaluated Ogoni land's environmental degradation and strife. Today's world is shifting from being anthropocentric to being biocentric, which promotes biodiversity. Even with increased understanding of the importance of biodiversity, third-world countries continue to face grave circumstances, especially those that are home to multinational corporations such as Nigeria. The Ogoni Community, which is situated in the Niger Delta of Nigeria, is one such community. The study used secondary data …

Evaluation of Physico-Chemical Parameters of Drilling Fluid and Its Effects on Water Quality Discharged in (Okoroagu River) in Etche LGA of Rivers State
Abstract: The study evaluated the surface water quality of Okoroagu River, Niger Delta of Nigeria, in order to determine the water quality index. Water samples were collected at five sampling points of the Okoroagu river. The results revealed that the Physicochemical and heavy metals parameters exceeded the NSDWQ and WHO recommended permissible limits except for TDS, pH, EC, Zinc, Chromium, Nickel and Manganese whicht were within the acceptable limit. The water …

Bioremediation of Crude Oil-Contaminated Loamy Soil Using Plantain (Musa Paradisiaca) Stem Waste as a Biostimulant
Abstract: Crude oil contamination of soil is a pressing environmental challenge in oil-producing regions, especially in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. It degrades soil fertility, disrupts microbial ecosystems, and poses long-term ecological and health risks. Traditional remediation methods are often cost- prohibitive and environmentally intrusive, prompting the search for sustainable alternatives. This study investigates the potential of plantain (Musa paradisiaca) stem waste – a readily available agricultural byproduct – as a …

Evaluation of Agro-based Adsorbents for Oil Spill Remediation in Freshwater and Saltwater Environments: Kinetic and Adsorption Model Analysis
Abstract: Environmental pollution caused by oil spills poses significant risks to both human health and ecosystems, particularly in regions like Nigeria’s Niger Delta, where oil spills are frequent. Conventional methods for oil spill cleanup have limitations, which has prompted research into alternative, more effective techniques. This study investigates the use of agro-based materials, specifically plantain and banana species, combined with clay soil as adsorbents for oil removal in freshwater and saltwater …
