Experimental Evaluation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Composites for Structural Applications
Abstract: Composites made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) are currently one of the most widely used material classes in advanced engineering applications because of their remarkable environmental resistance, dimensional stability, and strength-to-weight ratio. The vacuum bag moulding method was used in this study to create CFRP laminates with different fiber-to-resin weight ratios: 50:50, 55:45, 60:40, 65:35, and 70:30. The reinforcement phase was made of unidirectional carbon fibre fabric and the …

New Insight into the Composition and Structure of Sizing Agent from NMR Spectroscopy
Abstract: Sized carbon fibers (CFs) are of commercial significance as they form the main load-bearing component in advanced materials, namely, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Much of the knowledge of sizing composition and the process of sizing is a subject of intellectual property rights owing to its commercial relevance. In this original research article, deeper insights into the structure and composition of the sizing agent used for the surface modification of commercial …

Enhancing Delamination Resistance in CFRP Composites through surface Functionalization of Woven carbon Fiber by CuO Nanostructures
Abstract: In order to produce a nanostructured interphase that improves the interfacial interaction with an epoxy resin matrix, copper oxide (CuO) nanostructures were hydrothermally formed onto woven carbon fibers (WCF). Hexagonal CuO nanorods were created using a two-step, seed-assisted solvothermal technique on plain woven carbon fiber. This study investigates the effects of surface modification of carbon fibers by the formation of CuO nanostructures using a hydrothermal technique on the mechanical properties …

Optimizing Vehicle Structures Using Functionally Graded Materials of Aluminum and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites
Abstract: This article investigates the optimization of vehicle structures through application of functionally graded materials (FGMs), specifically aluminium and carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. Such materials, known as FGMs, are characterized by spatial variations in composition and structure designed to improve so-called performance attributes. For the purposes of this research, the material properties of aluminium and CFRP composites are taken to be randomly distributed in thickness direction of a FGM …

High-Velocity Impact Response of CFRP and Hybrid Composites: A Comprehensive Review on Ballistic Resistance and Damage Mechanisms
Abstract: This review consolidates recent advances in the study of high-velocity impact response of carbon fiber reinforced polymer and hybrid composites. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites are widely applied in aerospace, automotive, and defense due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, stiffness, and durability. However, their susceptibility to impact damage such as delamination, matrix cracking, and fiber breakage limits their performance under dynamic loading. To overcome these challenges, researchers have explored reinforcement …

Diglycidyl Ether of Bisphenol A (DGEBA) Based Epoxy Sizing Agent Induces Surface Polarity in Carbon Fibers†
Abstract: Determination of the chemical structure and composition of the sizing agent is a challenge as its concentration is low, varying in the range from ~0.5 wt.% (for polyacrylonitrile, PAN, based carbon fibers) to ~1 wt.% (for pitch-based carbon fibers). Moreover, such a piece of knowledge is vital for designing compatible polymer matrices to prepare CFRPs for diverse applications. As a result, the sizing layer that is coated on the carbon …
