Impact of Amiloride-Hydrochlorthiazide Diuretic Against the Pathway of Uric Acid – VLDL and Peroxynitrite in Essential Hypertension
Abstract: Thiazides induce metabolic derangement in terms of hyperlipidemia, glucose intolerance, hyperuricemia and electrolytes imbalance. Co-amiloride-hydrochlorthiazide therapy favorably corrects the hypokalemia that is induced by thiazides alone. This study was aimed to identify the interactions between serum uric acid, very-low-density-lipoprotein (VLDL) and peroxynitrite in essential hypertensive patients using amiloride-hydrochlorthiazide as antihypertensive therapy. A total number of fifty patients (12 males and 38 females) with a history of hypertension were admitted in …

‘Betazen’ Herbal Formulation, Ameliorates Experimentally Induced Metabolic Disturbances in Insulin Resistant Rats
Abstract: The present study was designed to evaluate anti-diabetic activity of ayurvedic formulation ‘Betazen’ in experimentally induced insulin resistant rats. Wistar rats were being rendered insulin resistant by administration of dexamethasone (2 μg/day s.c), along with high fat-high sugar (HFHS) diet (i.e. vanaspati ghee and fructose enriched) for 42 days. Animals with fasting blood glucose levels (BGL) of more than 150 mg/dl were selected, divided into different groups and administered 2.7 …

Subcutaneous Infection Caused by Paecilomyces variotii in an Immunocompromised Patient with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia – A Case Study
Abstract: Paecilomyces can cause hyalohyphomycosis, a type of fungal infection in which the basic tissue form of fungus is hyaline and any pigment in the cell wall is not present. Generally Paecilomyces infects immunocompromised patients, though it infects immunocompetent host also, commonly with eye implants and surgery. There are two important species of Paecilomyces, Paecilomyces lilacinus and Paecilomyces variotii, which are reported to cause human infection. Here we are reporting a …

Democracy and Gasset’s ‘The Revolt of the Masses’: An Exposition
Abstract: Democracy simply put, is the government of “the people”. There is no doubt that the rise of “the people” is now a principal political force in our contemporary world. Though democracy is largely celebrated today, Ortega y Gasset, in his book Revolt of the Masses thinks that it is an unfortunate incident. For him, the masses, regrettably, are vulgar. The masses are drunken by the possibilities that contemporary science has …
