Role of Clay Liners in Municipal Solid Waste Landfills: A Review
Abstract: Rapid population growth has significantly increased the generation of municipal solid waste (MSW) in urban and suburban regions. Disposal of MSW in landfills without proper liner systems may lead to leachate migration and subsequent contamination of groundwater and surrounding soils. The use of liner systems at the base of landfills is therefore essential to minimize leachate percolation and protect the environment. Geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) and compacted clay liners (CCLs) …

Seismic-Resilient Structural Systems: Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract: Earthquakes represent one of the most destructive natural hazards, capable of causing severe structural damage, loss of life, and substantial economic disruption. Seismic waves propagating through the ground can induce excessive forces and deformations in buildings, often leading to partial or complete collapse. Statistical records indicate that thousands of earthquakes occur globally each year, including several major events that result in significant damage. Past earthquake disasters have repeatedly demonstrated that …

Assessment of Clayey Soils and Bentonite to Use as Compacted Clay Liner for the Disposal of Municipal Solid Wastes at Lucknow City, India
Abstract: Dumping of municipal solid wastes in a pit without liner causes groundwater contamination. Use of locally available clayey soils will be a cost-effective landfill technique. Mixing of locally available soils with bentonite reduces the permeability. To develop the liner for the disposal of municipal solid wastes generated from Lucknow city, India, the soil samples were collected from three different locations as nearby the Sagar Institute, Barabanki district; near railway crossing, …

Analysis of Elevated Liquid Storage Tank on Sloping Ground with Variable Heights
Abstract: Past earthquake events have shown that even well-designed elevated water tanks can suffer severe damage or collapse. Much of this damage occurs due to a limited understanding of the behavior and appropriate selection of supporting systems during the design process. With a large mass concentrated at the top of slender supports, these tanks are especially vulnerable to horizontal seismic forces. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the strength and performance …

Structural Integrity Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Frames Under Progressive Collapse Scenarios
Abstract: This study examines how a tall reinforced concrete (RC) frame may gradually collapse under several column removal situations, such as edge, end, center, zigzag, and two-column failures. The study assesses the structural reaction based on displacement, inter-story drift, and Demand–Capacity Ratio (DCR) using nonlinear static pushover analysis carried out in ETABS. According to the analysis, the frame's stability is seriously jeopardized when two nearby columns and end columns are removed, …
