Long Acting Depot Formulation: History, Mechanism, its Manufacturing and Market Review

Abstract

Patient compliance is a very important factor in the treatment of any disease. Specially intreatment of chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis, psychosis patient need to take medicinefor longer time. In such cases long-acting depot injection became excellent option for treatment.This drug delivery involves drug release over a period of several weeks and months. These depotformulations can be prepared by using biodegradable polymer Poly (lactide-co-glycolide)PLGA. Various methods are widely used for preparation of drug containing PLGAmicrospheres such as solvent evaporation and solvent extraction method, spray drying method,double emulsion method, phase separation coacervation technique.
