Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop nano-scale delivery system to improve nanometric size range, percentage drug entrapment efficiency, controlled release of the incorporated drug and the protection against degradation. 5-FU loaded cubosomal dispersion was prepared by the bottom up technique and formulation was characterized. From this, 5-FU cubosomal nanosponges were prepared by the emulsion solvent diffusion method using various pH dependent polymers and evaluated, encapsulation of this formulation into a tablet by direct compression method and also perform the coating of the tablet with Eudragit solution. Evaluation of 5-FU cubosomal nanosponges predicted better particle size, zeta potential, and 86.6% of drug entrapment efficiency. In vitro release profile of the drug shows that the cubosomal nanosponge tablet is mainly targeted to the colon. The drug release mechanism from the tablets was found to be Super case II transport kind of diffusion. The formulated cubosomal nanosponges mainly results in the targeted release of the drug. Cubosomal nanosponge tablet is having improved stability, penetrability, improved patient compliance, and enhanced formulation flexibility.  Keywords: 5-Fluorouracil, Cubosomal nanosponge, Colon targeting, Tablets, Eudragit S-100Cite this ArticleArun Raj.
