Robotics and Automation in Dairy Farming

  1. Swati Sharma

Abstract

Robotics and automation have become integral components of modern dairy farming, reshaping traditional practices and revolutionizing the industry. In the context of dairy farming, robotics refers to the use of automated systems and robotic technologies to perform tasks that were traditionally carried out by human labor or conventional machinery. Automation, on the other hand, encompasses a broader spectrum, incorporating technology to control and monitor various processes within the dairy production chain. The historical development and adoption of robotics and automation in the dairy industry provide a fascinating narrative of technological evolution and its impact on agricultural practices. Beginning with the introduction of mechanical milking machines in the mid-20th century, the industry witnessed a gradual shift towards computerized systems for monitoring and managing herd health and production. The late 20th century marked a significant milestone with the advent of Automated Milking Systems (AMS), offering voluntary milking and unprecedented flexibility in dairy operations. As technology continued to advance into the 21st century, the integration of sophisticated sensor technology and data analytics further enhanced precision farming in dairy operations. This abstract explores the transformative journey from basic mechanization to the current state of robotics and automation in dairy farming. The adoption of these technologies has not only increased operational efficiency but has also addressed concerns related to animal welfare and sustainability. The historical trajectory reflects a dynamic interplay between economic feasibility, technological innovation, and the ever-growing need for sustainable and efficient agricultural practices. This review delves into the nuances of this journey, shedding light on the pivotal role played by robotics and automation in shaping the contemporary landscape of dairy farming.
