Abstract

Background: Epithelialisation i.e. restoration of an intact epidermal layer is an essential criterion for wound healing. In fact, a wound which is not reepithelialised completely is not considered as healed one, no matter how perfectly the underlying dermal structures are restored. When the process of epithelialisation is compromised, impaired or delayed, it results in non-healing wound. Objectives: To assess the effect of the Unani formulation Zaroor-E-Qawi in the induction of epithelisation in cases chronic wound. Material and methods: A non randomised, prospective, clinical study was carried out on the cases of the chronic wound of Wagner’s grade-0, I and II. The patients in the age group of 18 -70 were included in the study. Toileting of the wound was done with Normal saline (NS) and research drugs ‘Zaroor-E-Qawi’ in the form of a fine powder was dusted over the wound and dressing done on every 3rd day taking care all aseptic precaution. The total duration of the study was 45 days and evaluation of the wound was done on every 15th day of the study. Results: The mean epithelialisation percentage on the base day of study was 0.57±3.11 which reaches to 86.82±23.40 at the end 45 days of the study. 73.3% improvement observed with value of P <0.001, which is highly significant statistically. Interpretation & Conclusion: a significant epithelisation was induced by formulation Zaroor-E-Qawi, thus it can emerge as an effective treatment regimen for chronic wound.
