Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the surfactant - sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) on curcumin microspheres. Methods: Curcumin microspheres were prepared by solvent evaporation method by varying the ratios of the polymers like Eudragit S 100, ethyl cellulose (EC). Ethanol/dichloromethane blend was used as solvent in a ratio of 1:1 to prepare the drug-polymer dispersion and the surfactant SLS was used to prepare the aqueous phase. The prepared microspheres were evaluated for percentage yield, flow properties, entrapment efficiency, drug content, drug loading, particle size analysis, drug release, surface morphology and release kinetics.Result: The curcumin microspheres showed yield, drug content, drug entrapment efficiency and particle size in the ranges of 30 to 89 %, 58.14-76.13%, 81.1-91.4% and 03-60µm respectively. Maximum drug release after 24 hrs was found to be 99% for F-1 formulation. Conclusion: The developed curcumin microsphere with Eudragit S100 shows a promising system for oral sustained administration of curcumin and with better entrapment efficiency than with ethyl cellulose in the surfactant Sodium lauryl sulphate.
