Abstract

Silver particles have a wide range of biomedical applications, including their use as drug. In this paper, we report on the synthesis of silver particles using crude aqueous extract of Manihot esculenta leaf extract. Two different (conventional stirring and ultrasonic) methods were employed in the reduction of AgNO3 process. Native extract as well Ag colloidal extract were checked cytotoxicity against Human Cervical Carcinoma cell. The anti cancer results achieved excellent in silver with extract when compare with native extract.  The synthesized silver particles were coated on polypropylene (PP) nonwoven to develop bacterial filtration membrane. UV-visible spectrum showed characteristic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption peak of silver. HR-TEM analysis revealed the morphology of silver crystals and SAED pattern confirms the formation of silver particles. Silver-coated PP nonwoven was characterized by FT-IR and SEM with EDX analyses. Coated PP was able to reduce bacterium used (E.coli and S. aureus) density significantly after 24 h, lasting until the end of treatment (48 h). Bacterial filtration ability was checked with standard test method ASTM F2101 against S. aureus aerosol. The results showed that the PP had sufficient merit to sojourn the influence of bacteria on it. To the best of our knowledge, this is first the report on the modified bacterial filtration membrane preparation.
