Abstract

Seismic resiliency of new buildings has developed over the years due to enhancements in seismic codes and design practices. Though, existing buildings designed and built under past codes are vulnerable and require a performance-based screening and retrofit prioritizing. Performance based seismic design provides a framework for determining the level of safety and level of property protection in earthquake events with the consideration of uncertainties in the quantification of possible hazard and assessment of the actual building response. This design offers society the potential to be more efficient and effective in the investment of financial resources to avoid future earthquake losses. The building evaluation is performed during a pushover analysis, and performance objective are obtained through initial stiffness of the pushover curve. In present study two RC buildings are analyzed (Designed as per IS 456:2000) using pushover analysis and redesigning by changing the main reinforcement of various frame elevations at different storey level and analyzing. The pushover analysis has been carried out using design software SAP 2000.The results of analysis are compared in terms of base shear and roof displacement to ensure life safety and is termed as Performance based design.
