Abstract

In this study, single lap joints were prepared by adding nano-additives (Al2O3) in the quantity of 3 wt % in the phenolic resin, and the overlap length was varied to observe the effect on joint engineering properties. In the experiments, a single component system of a specific grade of phenolic resin was used as a binder, and aluminum (AA8011), as well as stainless steel (SS304), was used as adherends. The adherends were sized and prepared precisely in accordance with ASTM standards D1002-99. The dimensions were maintained with the help of a water jet cutting machine in the dimension of {(88.9+m) ×25.4×2} mm (l×w×t) with m (13, 20, 25, 35 mm) varied as overlap length. Prepared specimens after curing were tested on Instron 1195, 100 kN Universal tensile testing machine at room temperature to study the mechanical properties of the lap joints. Engineering results for nano-modified phenolic resin binder joints would be beneficial in the design and development of lightweight and high-strength composite structures for the process industries as well as other specific applications.
