Abstract

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is one of the most extensively used non-conventional machining processes. It uses thermal energy to machine all electrically conductive materials of any toughness and hardness for manufacturing of dies, aerospace parts. Since there is no direct contact between workpiece and tool electrode in EDM. Work material hardness is not a hurdle in machining by EDM, which is principally useful for machining of die profiles/ contours. This paper deals with the performance of hardened steels having different hardness value in respect of MRR and surface finish in EDM. The relative change in MRR and surface finish by employing different pulse ON/OFF time at constant current has been investigated. It has been observed that relatively higher hardness of the work material is more sensitive to surface finish rather than MRR. The work is expected to provide a guideline in understanding the common trade-off between MRR and surface finish with the used materials for practical applications through the given experimental conditions.
