A SIMULATION STUDY OF THE EFFICIENCY OF HIGH VOLTAGE α-Si STAND-ALONE PV INSTALLATIONSBy Carlos Armenta-Deu, David Arroyo del Saz
Abstract: The paper analyzes different configurations, direct-PV, PV-battery, either with PWM or MPPregulator, and hybrid-PV, of stand-alone PV installation operating with high voltage α-Si panels thatsupplies energy to a DC-AC external circuit. Global efficiency is determined as a function of voltageconversion ratio and individual element efficiency. The paper concludes that direct-PV is the mostefficient mode with average performance ratio (PR) of 92.2% followed by PV-battery with MPPT,68.3% of efficiency, and PWM …

Modelling and Simulation of a Combined System Geothermal Binary Plant and Parabolic Solar ConcentratorBy Carlos Armenta-Deu
Abstract: The present work describes a new prototype that uses the concentrated solar radiation to improve the performance of geothermal power plants. Current methods of heat recovering have been used to reduce the amount of fossil fuel used to produce vapor or to increase gas pressure and temperature, depending on the type of system; however, concentrated solar energy is an unknown resource that may help to increase vapor production at a …

Performance of Combined PV-Inverter System: Use of Amorphous and Crystalline PanelsBy Carlos Armenta-Deu
Abstract: This paper is aimed at analyzing the performance of a combined PV-inverter system connected to an external load using either amorphous or crystalline photovoltaic modules. The analysis is based on previous theoretical analysis that uses the efficiency of the PV panel and of the DC/AC inverter as a key parameter. Different configurations using the same energy resource have been simulated to determine the efficiency of the PV panel, DC/AC inverter, …

Effects of Rotor-Blade Deformation onto Performance of Domestic Wind TurbinesBy Carlos Armenta-Deu
Abstract: Paper is focused on the influence that blade deformations by torsion and bending due to drag, lift, and gravitational effects has on the performance of small wind turbines. A blade model of stiff finite elements connected by rotating junctions is used. Mechanical deformations are simulated by controlled gravity and torsional forces, and their effects are measured through the response of the wind turbine. Tests have been run before and after …

Analysis of The Performance of A PV/PCM System in Variable Solar Radiation ConditionsBy Carlos Armenta-Deu
Abstract: This paper studies the performance of a PV/PCM system operating at variable solar radiation conditions. The system has been tested for six different solar radiation levels, from 250 W/m2 to 950 W/m2 determining the steady-state temperature for every case. An algorithm has been developed to predict the steady-state temperature. This prediction has produced values within 97% accuracy of experimental data. A reduction of temperature up to 18.9ºC has been achieved. …

Modeling Cogeneration System in Shallow Geothermal InstallationsBy Leticia Bottazzi, Carlos Armenta-Deu
Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical modeling of a cogeneration system using multiple heat exchangers and thermoelectric generator. The modeled system, designed for shallow geothermal energy, is a closed piping unit containing water as heat transfer fluid that circulates through a closed loop releasing thermal energy at the surface for heating and sanitary hot water. In addition, a Peltier cells array is attached to the piping system to generate electricity, thus …

Abstract: In this paper, an empirical method, based on statistical analysis, is proposed to determine correction factor for Li-Po battery capacity calculation. The method uses statistical analysis for the estimation of the battery capacity, using a capacity correction factor previously determined. The method takes into account the effects that the discharge current has on (the) battery capacity. The method has been tested in two types of lithium batteries, Li-ion and LiPo …

SYMMETRY AND ASYMMETRY MODEL FOR THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY IN POROUS MEDIABy Carlos Armenta-Deu, Leticia Bottazzi
Abstract: This paper focuses on determining thermal conductivity in porous media using symmetry and asymmetry models. Since porous media are not uniform and homogeneous in most of the cases, anisotropy must be taken into account, what derives in the application of an asymmetry model as thermal gradients are not equal in all directions. The paper demonstrates that, under certain conditions, isotropic conditions, therefore, symmetry model can be applied to non-homogeneous or …
