Abstract

This paper was aimed at developing a safe speed limit, which is lacking for Sani Abacha Road in Port Harcourt of Rivers State. A comprehensive spot speed study involving traffic volume and traffic speed studies was carried out to determine the different speed percentiles that were used in setting up the speed limit for this roadway. The time mean speed and space mean speed were also determined for the roadway through the speed studies. From the analysis of field data obtained in this study, the time mean speed and space mean speed were determined as 47.13km/h and 44.88km/h respectively. The speed limit was determined as 42 – 70 km/h for this roadway with an average speed of 42km/h, a safe speed of 57km/h and a modal speed of 42.5km/h. It was therefore recommended, that the traffic characteristics obtained be used in future construction or rehabilitation works of the roadway. Keywords: Speed percentiles, speed limit, spot speed, SaniAbacha road, traffic volumeCite this ArticleEme Dennis Budu, Ohwerhi Kelly Erhiferhi.Developinga Safe Speed LimitforSaniAbachaRoadin Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
