Chronological Evolution of Street Furniture Construction in India

Abstract

Street furniture is a very immediate and important element in our surrounding that very few people relate to but on contrary it relates to them in numerous ways that they even do not realise. Street furniture plays an important role in people’s lives that they often realise and probably overlooked. It surrounds people in various ways in many areas, from lightening ways in night to directing in traffic and from giving places for rest to keeping safe as pedestrians. Although it may be overlooked easily but it provides us very interesting and very important piece of information and valid insights of thoughts and wills of authorities, architects, planners and designers. The aim of this paper is to review the evolution of street furniture design in India and the reasons that compelled man to do it. To do research and to receive an advantage from it we need to date back and look upon how transportation practices in country are chronologically evolved and then to create timeline of street furniture design and giving a thought on its future.
