Cinnamon Extract and Cinnamaldehyde Inhibit the Replication of T2 Bacteriophage in E. coli: Potential for Use in Antiviral and Anticancer Therapy
Abstract: An extract of cinnamon inhibits the growth of bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. At concentrations of 1, 2, 4, and 8 ml per 100 ml of Luria-Bertani broth, cinnamon extract had virtually no effect on the growth of E. coli. At the same concentrations, however, the yield of T2 bacteriophage was 98, 76, 64.5, and 61.8% of the control. Addition of cinnamon extract 37 min before infection produced a yield …

Turmeric Extract and Curcumin Enhance the Yield of T2 Bacteriophage in E. coli
Abstract: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE It has been demonstrated that turmeric and curcumin—a chemical present in turmeric—have antibacterial and antiviral activity for viruses of humans. Increasing concentrations of turmeric extract and purified curcumin have no effect on the replication of Escherichia coli cultured in Luria-Bertani broth. Increasing concentrations of curcumin enhance the replication of T2 bacteriophage in E. coli cells. E. coli cells treated with purified curcumin …

Differential Susceptibility of Bacteriophage and Viruses to Reactive Oxygen Species
Abstract: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Reactive oxygen species of superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals were generated by mixing xanthine, xanthine oxidase and iron citrate and incubating for 5 min at room temperature. T2 bacteriophage, encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus, adenovirus, or vaccinia virus particles were incubated with the solution for various periods of time after reactive oxygen species were formed. Physical damage to the virus particles that affected …

Sodium Fluoride Enhances T2 Bacteriophage Yield
Abstract: Sodium Fluoride is a strong stimulator of the adenylate cyclase enzyme both in eucaryotic and in procaryotic cells. Stimulation of adenylate cyclase produces cAMP and increases the metabolic activity of bacterial cells by methods that are as yet not completely understood. The addition of either sodium chloride or sodium bromide to bacteriological growth medium moderately affects the growth rate of E. coli cells after 2 h of exposure while the …

Inhibition of Replication of T2 Bacteriophage in Escherichia coli by 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON)
Abstract: 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The antibiotic known as 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine, DON, inhibits the growth of several types of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. It has also been demonstrated that DON inhibits the replication of poliovirus, respiratory syncytial virus, mumps and herpes simplex virus in cultured eukaryotic cells. At a concentration of 0.03 mM DON, the replication of Escherichia coli cells was inhibited by 11.0% …
