Abstract

Ecological concerns have resulted in renewed interest in natural materials in terms of their industrial applications and fundamental research. Recyclability and environmental safety are becoming increasingly important to the introduction of natural materials and products. Petroleum based products such as resins in thermo set plastics are toxic and non- biodegradable. The resins and fibres used in green composites are biodegradable when they are dumped, decomposed by the action of microorganisms. They are converted into the form of H2O, CO2 which are absorbed into the plant systems. The purpose of this work is to analyse the thermal and mechanical properties of the Palmyra Bract fibre reinforced in Polyester Resin. The composites have been made with and without chemical treatment to Palmyra bract fibre and addition of chalk powder to the Polyester Matrix. The thermal properties such as thermal Conductivity, specific heat, and thermal diffusivity for maximum load i.e. 5.5gms are experimentally investigated.  And also mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile module, flexural strength, flexural module and impact strength when specimen subjected to varying weight of fibre (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 grams) are determined. Graphs are drawn to predict the behaviour of the above thermal and mechanical properties of the fibre composite.
