Gears are one of the most critical components in mechanical power transmission systems. Today’s competitive business in the global market has brought increasing awareness to optimize the gear design. The gears are generally used to transmit power or torque and the efficiency of transmission is very high when compared to other kind of transmissions like belt drives and chain drives. The helical gear offers high contact and more friction which avoids slippage when compared to spur gear. During power transmission gears are subject to various stresses based on the load applied. The objective of the work is to estimate the Bending stress, Contact stress, Von Mises stress, Prinicipal Stress, Shear stress and Deformation. Three dimensional solid models are generated by Solidworks2010 software and analysis is carried out using ANSYS15 software. The analytical investigation is based on Lewis stress formula and the aim of the present study is to focus on the effect of helix angle on induced stresses of marine gears. Modal analysis is carried out to find the natural frequencies and deformation during vibrations at natural frequencies. Aluminium A360 is considered in the analysis. Keywords: Helical Gear, FEA, ANSYS, Helix AngleCite this Article SavarapuSwarnaBala, Kondapalli Siva Prasad.Effect of helix angle on performance of helical gear for marine applications.Trends in Machine Design. 2015; 2(3): 47–56p.
