Abstract

The thrust for design and development of nonmetallic gear results in fabrication of inexpensive cement reinforced polypropylene based composite material spur gear. In this work, several experiments are conducted under variable loads and speeds and subsequently the resulting effect of heat emission on the performance of the gear is analyzed. A laboratory made gear test-rig is modified and suitably retrofitted; while pure polypropylene and 10 wt% cement reinforced spur gears are selected and experiment is conducted under preset load and speed. The rise in surface temperature was captured by Infra-red (IR) camera supported by inter-phased IRBIS-3 PLUS software and subsequently, captured data are quantified and studied. Test results show significant increase in heat emission when the test speed reaches a critical value of the gear. Further, experiments are also conducted with cracks on the tooth root that show distinct influence on the contact flanks surface temperature of the gear. Experiment results validate that dynamic performance depends on the factors like operating speed, applied load, duration of operation and percentage of cement fillers etc. Keywords: Non-metallic spur gear; surface temperature; applied load; operating speed, wearCite this Article Jagannath Sardar, Dibakar Bandopadhya.
