Processing and Properties of Corn Starch based Thermoplastic Matrix for Green Composites: A Review
Abstract: New trend is emerging in development of renewable materials such as green composites which are having wide variety of applications. With growing interest and importance, the use thermoplastic starch based bio-polymers has led to more focus on the use of locally available materials. When corn starch based thermoplastic matrix is reinforced with natural fibers, desired physical-chemical properties can be achieved through melt processing. The effect of plasticizers plays vital role …

Preparation and Properties of Blends of Thermoplastic Polymer with Thermoplastic Starch
Abstract: Problems in making biodegradable plastics are incompatible between hydrophilic/polar and hydrophobic/non-polar ingredients. Ingredients like compatibilizers were added to improve the compatibility between the two ingredients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of thermoplastic potato starch (TPS) content and two compatibilizers (maleic anhydride, MA, and dibutyl maleate, DM) on melt flow behavior, mechanical features (tensile, bending, and Izod impact test), phase morphology, thermal behaviors (DSC, and TGA/DTG), …

Bio-Derived TPS–Lignin Hybrid Composites Reinforced with Modified Coir and Plantain Fibers for Eco-Efficient Structural Applications
Abstract: This study develops bio-derived polymer composites using a thermoplastic starch–lignin (TPS–lignin) matrix reinforced with alkali-treated coir and plantain fibers for sustainable load-bearing applications. The TPS–lignin matrix was formulated using cassava starch, glycerol, and 10 wt% lignin, while coir and plantain fibers were surface-modified using 5 wt% NaOH to enhance interfacial compatibility. Composite laminates were fabricated with varying fiber loadings (10–40 wt%) through melt-mixing and hot-press compression. Tensile, thermal, morphological, and …

Fabrication and Characterization of PLA-CSP Composites via FDM for Biodegradable Food Packaging
Abstract: In light of the growing need for environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastic packaging, this study presents the design of a food-grade, biocompatible packaging material composed of Polylactic Acid (PLA) and packed with coconut shell powder (CSP). One of the most well-known thermoplastic polymers, PLA is produced from renewable resources like sugarcane or maize starch. Its nontoxicity, biodegradability, and adherence to food safety standards and regulations provide energy. Unfortunately, PLA's …
