Revitalizing Urban Canyons Through Innovative Thermal Strategies
Abstract: Urban canyons, environments very densely made up of tall buildings clustered on narrow streets, are treacherous when it comes to considerable heat retention and greatly increase wind speeds. The resulting conditions fuel the Urban Heat Island effect. That means urban canyons feel very hot and this of course harms both comfort and health of those who dwell in them. This research tackles the serious issue of discomfort due to heat …

Reduction of Air Pollutants of Urban Canyons through Management of Particulate Matters 2.5 in the Streets
Abstract: Urban canyons are long and high sky-scrappers closely to narrow streets result in very different microclimate challenges. These spaces often trap pollutants and restrict air circulation and intensify more retention of heat making them very uncomfortable for pedestrians. In order to resolve this issue a strong set of design guidelines and frameworks were needed which can balance out the human comfort and environmental aspects. This research studies strategies to improve …

The Future of Open Streets, New York City
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid adjustments to New York City public spaces, leading to the implementation of the Open Streets program by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). This program transformed streets across the city into pedestrian- friendly zones by limiting vehicular traffic and providing much-needed outdoor space for residents to walk, bike, and socialize safely. While successful in some areas, the program faced significant challenges. These included equity issues, …

Rethinking Urban Design: Architectural Approaches to Walkability and Sprawl
Abstract: As cities stretch their concrete fingers across the landscape, architecture stands as both the problem and the solution. Like a master chess player, thoughtful architecture can reshape urban spaces, transforming car-centric sprawl into pedestrian-friendly havens. By crafting inviting streetscapes and mixed-use developments, architects weave a tapestry of walkable neighborhoods that pulse with life and connection. Streetscapes designed with wide sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, green spaces, and appropriate lighting further enhance the …
