Analysis of Crashworthiness of a Saloon Car Fitted with CNG Cylinder
Abstract: There is an increase in demand for compressed natural gas vehicles in India. Due to the high gasoline prices and lack of electric vehicle infrastructure in India, compressed natural gas vehicles are the only feasible option. This research work focuses on the crashworthiness of a saloon car fitted with a compressed natural gas cylinder under rear-collision conditions. Four different candidate materials of the same thickness are chosen for the cylinder …

Axial Compression Behavior of Aluminum (Al), Glass/Epoxy (GFRP) and Hybrid Al-GFRP Crash-box: An Experimental and Digital Image Correlation Approach
Abstract: The study aims to understand the axial compression characteristics and fracture of cylindrical Aluminum (Al), Glass/epoxy (GFRP) composite and Hybrid Al-GFRP crash-boxes. The hollow Al tubes are fabricated by rolling and bonding a thin aluminum sheet followed by rivet joints. The GFRP samples are manufactured using the wet-hand layup technique followed by the vacuum bagging method. Hybrid samples are manufactured by covering GFRP tubes with aluminum sheets on the outer …

Experimental Investigation of Polymer Composite-Based Protective Structures for Mitigating Crash-Induced Mechanical Abuse in Lithium-Ion Batteries
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of using polymer composite protective structures to protect against the mechanical abuses associated with crash impacts that affect lithium ion batteries in terms of their structural integrity and their overall safety. In addition to their use in electric vehicles, lithium ion batteries are also being increasingly used in renewable energy based energy storage systems because they have high energy densities, …

Design and Analysis of Honeycomb Rear Door Map Pocket by Application of Finite Element Method
Abstract: In modern automobiles, the door trim plays a vital role in both functionality and occupant safety. It integrates various convenience features such as armrests, power window switches, and map pockets, while also contributing to crash energy absorption during side impacts. In such collisions, the occupant's body typically contacts the door trim, making its design and material selection critical for minimizing injury through controlled deformation and energy dissipation. This research focuses …

Multi-Layer Aluminum–Polymer Hybrid Structures for Improved Automotive Impact Performance
Abstract: Layered metal–polymer hybrid laminates have emerged as promising candidates for lightweight automotive structures requiring high impact resistance and structural reliability. In this study, aluminum/glass–epoxy hybrid laminates were fabricated using a symmetric stacking sequence through hot compression molding to evaluate their mechanical and energy absorption performance. Density analysis revealed an average measured density of 2.34 g/cm³, closely matching the theoretical value of 2.36 g/cm³, with a deviation of approximately 1.02%, indicating …
