A Review on Integrated Acoustic Emission and Piezoelectric Sensing for Real-Time Damage Characterization of Polymer Composite-Enhanced Concrete: Advances, Challenges, and Future Perspective
Abstract: Polymer composite reinforced concrete has been identified as an efficient material system that can enhance the mechanical properties, durability, and service life of modern structures. The combination of fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs), polymer modifiers, and hybrid composite reinforcements increases structural effectiveness. However, these systems are still vulnerable to damage processes, including matrix cracking, fiber breaking, interfacial debonding, and delamination. Thus, there is a need for structural health monitoring (SHM) strategies …

Formation and Fabrication of A 3D- Printed Polymer Propeller for Improved Propulsion and Minimal Acoustic Emission: A Comparative Study for Small Unmanned Vehicles
Abstract: The current research focuses on a comparative analysis of propeller designs to identify an option that enhances thrust efficiency while minimizing acoustic noise. The study evaluates three distinct types of propellers: the traditional three-blade propeller, the Sharrow propeller, and a novel aero propeller featuring an air foil-shaped cross-section. To facilitate a hands-on analysis, these propellers were produced using 3D printing technology, specifically employing ABS filament through a Fused Deposition Modelling …

Polymer-Based Acousto-Optic Ultrasonic Sensor for Non-Destructive Evaluation of Dielectric Insulation
Abstract: A dual-polymer fiber-optic sensor for monitoring partial discharge (PD) activity in high-voltage polymeric insulation is presented in this work for non-destructive evaluation and dielectric testing applications. Dielectric weakness within polymeric insulation leads to partial discharge activity, generating ultrasonic acoustic waves that propagate through the medium. The developed sensing assembly comprises a conical polymer-based horn that gathers and concentrates the ultrasonic acoustic emission energy generated by dielectric weakness, and a single-mode …

Assessment of Matrix Cracking and Fiber Breakage in Hybrid Composite Materials.
Abstract: Hybrid composite materials, combining two or more distinct fiber or matrix constituents, have emerged as advanced structural solutions for aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering applications. However, their complex microstructure makes them susceptible to multiple interacting damage mechanisms, particularly matrix cracking and fiber breakage. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of these damage modes, emphasizing their initiation, evolution, and combined effects on the mechanical integrity of hybrid composites. Matrix cracking …

Damage Evolution and Delamination Resistance in Polymer Matrix Functionally Graded Laminates
Abstract: Functionally graded laminates (FGLs) in polymer-matrix systems represent a promising pathway to enhance damage tolerance and delay delamination in advanced structural composites. In this study, we explore the mechanisms of damage initiation, propagation, and delamination resistance in polymer matrix functionally graded laminates (PM-FGLs) through a combined experimental–computational approach. Laminates with linear, exponential, and bio-inspired gradation profiles were fabricated using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and additive manufacturing techniques. Comprehensive mechanical …
