Degradation of Synthetic Reactive Red Dye and Bioremediation of Textile Effluent Using Penicillium chrysogenum in a Fluidized-Bed Reactor
Abstract: 800x600 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Bioremediation of reactive red dye using five fungal species (Aspergillus niger, Penicillium chrysogenum, Fusarium oxysporum, Trichoderma harzianum and Sacchromyces cerevisiae) was studied in a shake flask system for 13 days. A. niger (91%) and P. chrysogenum (91%) were efficient decolorizers of red dye followed by F. oxysporum, and T. harzianum (84% and 53% respectively). Decolorization efficiency of P. chrysogenum in fluidized-bed …

Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profile of Airborne Bacteria and Fungi at Owena Market, Osun State, Nigeria
Abstract: Environmental conditions and human activities influence the ubiquity and diversity of microorganisms in the atmosphere thereby acquiring the ability to resist antibiotics which poses serious public threat. Airborne bacteria and fungi isolated using settling plate method from three different points (where kolanuts, meat and onions are sold) at Owena Market, Osun state, Nigeria were assayed for antimicrobial susceptibility using disc diffusion. The microorganisms were identified as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, …

Comparative Study on Bioremediation for Oil Spills Using Microbes
Abstract: This research work was designed to compare and evaluate the capacity of microbes in bioremediating and biodegrading of hydrocarbons which are the major constituents of petroleum oil. An oil spill is a leakage from ocean-going tankers, pipelines or other oil sources. Bioremediation for oil spills is a technique that uses microbes to eliminate contamination of hydrocarbons from water and soil, thereby making them safe for aquatic and terrestrial species. Bioremediation …

Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Mirabilis jalapa of Indian Origin
Abstract: The in vitro antimicrobial activity of Mirabilis jalapa leaf extract was studied against selected pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Penicillium chrysogenum, Auriparus flaviceps and Trichoderma viridae by using agar diffusion and broth dilution methods. Leaves were extracted using solvents petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. Among the solvents tested, petroleum ether and chloroform extracts showed good antimicrobial activity against the selected pathogens. The growth inhibitors were …
