Nuclear Track Studies in India: A Historical Review
Abstract: Nuclear Tracks originate from the spontaneous fission of Uranium in minerals and can be revealed by etching with suitable chemical reagents as tracks. The applications of Nuclear Tracks were developed by R.L. Fleischer, P.B. Price and R.M. Walker in USA in various fields, viz., Geology, Biology, Archaeology, Nuclear Physics, Reactor Physics, Earthquake Studies and Space Physics. An historical review of Nuclear Track Studies in India is presented in this paper …

Radon Estimation in Water of Surrey Region of British Columbia, Canada using LR-115 Type II Nuclear Track Detector
Abstract: Radon activity concentrations were measured in the ocean, swamp and well water samples collected from Surrey region of British Columbia in Canada. The purpose of this study was to compare radon activity in all three sources of water. Water was collected in air tight bottles and stored for 2 weeks before investigation. LR-115 Type II nuclear track detectors of 1.5 cm 2 were used for recording radon alpha tracks. Tracks …

Heavy Ion Radiation Damage Track Studies in SSNTDs (Polymers, Glasses and Minerals) and Single Activation Energy Model
Abstract: My training in Marie and Pierre Curie University, Paris for the identification of relativistic particle tracks in nuclear emulsions came handy for shifting to Heavy ion track studies in solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs). Track formation mechanism in both may be different, but the basic nature of phenomenon by which the tracks are produced remains essentially the same. All charged particles produce ionisation of the medium and lose energy …

Radon Flux and Radium Content Determination in Cereals Products
Abstract: AbstractRadon (222Rn) in air is ubiquitous. Radon is a form of ionizing radiation and lung cancer is the only known effect on human exposure to radon in air. The radon gas can enter into the human body through respiring, drinking and eating and caused damage to respiratory and digestion system. Cereals products available in market were experimented by “Sealed Can Technique” using LR-II solid state nuclear track detectors which are …

Measurement of Radon Exhalation Rate from Building Materials
Abstract: Indoor radon has been recognized as one of the health hazards for mankind because long-term exposure to radon increases the risk of developing lung cancer. This study aims at assessing the contribution of building materials towards the total indoor radon exposure to the inhabitants of Nablus district, Palestine. The radon exhalation rate has been carried out for different building materials of international origin used in construction in Nablus district. The …

My Forays into Interdisciplinary Areas of Research
Abstract: This article discusses my journey in interdisciplinary areas of research in India as a pioneer. I was trained as a High Energy Nuclear Physicist at Marie Curie University, Paris, but on return to India, I had to train myself in many diverse fields due to lack of experimental facilities in my own field. My first foray was in Geochronology using fission track dating. Then, I got the opportunity to use …

Corrosion and Corrosion Protection of Cast iron due to Bio-organism
Abstract: Cast iron is a high tensile strength metal. It is generally used for making tools, pipe fitting, electrical fitting equipment and rail track. It interacts with corrosive substances to develop electrochemical cell on their interface. Corrosive substances are acids, bases, salts, bio-wastes, particulates and pollutants. These substances produce hostile medium for materials. These harmful wastes discharge by industries, households, agricultural, urbanization, development of infrastructure, construction works, thermal power stations, hydropower, …

Recent Development to Track Contraband using Muon
Abstract: The muon is one of nature’s fundamental particles discovered in 1937 by Carl Anderson. A muon is an elementary subatomic particle similar to electron, but with a mass approximately 207 times greater and, sometimes it is called as a “heavy electron”. Muons are generated naturally when cosmic rays collide with atoms in earth’s upper atmosphere and, then raining down all the times upon the surface of earth. Muons can be …
